I had been using Muir Glen Organic whole/diced tomatoes, but after having had cancer I read a lot of research publications indicating that BPA's estrogen mimicking effects can be quite dangerous. BPA found in cans with acidic foods are some of the worst since the chemical is leached out even more. The same is true of plastic containers with BPA -- acid, heat or surface abrasion lead to much greater leaching into the food.

Although Muir Glen is promising to get rid of BPA in their can liners, they are replacing it with some unspecified 'vinyl-based substitute'. If you want to get their cans without BPA, look for a use-by date of around the summer of 2013. [This info is per a conversation with their customer service representative.]

I had heard about Pomi Tetra-pak products before -- Mario Batali and other foodies/chefs have recommended them so I thought I would give them a try.

The tomatoes are naturally grown in Italy without pesticides and have no salt added. I used them to create a wonderful marinara sauce. They taste great and I am very happy with the quality.

Taste & quality before corporate productivity! Pomi produces some of the highest quality packaged tomato products with the added bonus of being GMO and BPA free. And it's not just the fact that they are packed in Tetra-pack that makes them BPA free, it's also because they are not stored/transported in any BPA lined containers before final packaging. As far as GMO's, it looks like we are going to have to source produce from European countries that require GMO ingredient labeling until the USA catches up.

These are great tomatoes, from Italy, in a box. They are chopped just right for all kinds of sauces, soups, and everything. Great flavor. These are a basic in my pantry. With these, olive oil, garlic, and some cans of beans you are prepared. A great basis for a puttanesca sauce (this plus garlic, black olives, hot pepper flakes, anchovy paste, and capers) or just about anything else.

my brother lived in Italy for a couple of years and has always described how the tomatoes come in cartons and that they tasted different than canned tomatoes in the US. I had pretty much given up on making anything with tomatoes that weren't fresh because I just don't like the taste of canned tomatoes, so when I ran across these I decided to try them despite the cost. I wasn't disappointed. When the garden isn't producing these will do just fine. The flavor is less acidic and without the metallic taste from the can the flavors come through better.

I've been using this brand for a few yrs, so glad I discovered it. I'm Italian-American so sauce is running through my veins, it's a very important food product to me. I love the ingredient label, one word, TOMATOES! It is so fresh, and the color so 'real' for lack of a better word. I love the chopped variety over their strained and pizza sauce, this one is truly my very fave. I love making shellfish cioppino with this, you need a fresh, marinara-type sauce for that, a sauce that isn't cooked that long and tastes fresh like you just cut up some ripe tomatoes. I sometimes add a pinch of sugar to it; as with most tomatoes, this is a little trick that enhances the natural sweetness, the way salt enhances foods. The current price of about $3.55 a container is a bit higher than I saw in my store just yesterday, about $2.79 there, but there are only a few bc they get snatched up so quickly. This 12-pack assures me a supply. I don't mind spending a little more for something that I enjoy very much and is of superior quality.

Unlike another reviewer, I have no complaint on the delivery. I am a PRIME member and got it exactly 2 days later ordering it, on time and punctual. The expiration date is Feb of 2016 (today is March 2014)...so all in all, I am pleased. If you have a chance to pick up and sample one container of this at your local market, you can test it out yourself. You may end up buying the 12-pack too. I had bought a 12-pack from an online store once, and with discounts and shipping, it still cost about what Amazon is charging now, about $42 for a 12-pack.

All in all, as good as any higher-priced San Marzano can of tomatoes, and this is from Italy as well, contains no citric acid where basically all other canned tomatoes do. You be the judge, that's the final word. WOrth a try.

After trying them for the first time, this is now the only packaged tomatoes I use. I'm sure there are health benefits as others have said (BPA free), but my reason is that they taste much better. Canned tomatoes often have a slight metallic taste, especially when you prepare a simple tomato sauce with few ingredients and when not cooked very long. They also do last a while until you open it (should be used right away after opening). They also have smaller sizes available, which is perfect for my cooking needs.

If you're cooking with tomatoes, using packaged is actually a good move. They're usually really flavorful, which can't always be said about the fresh that are available most places. Pomi tomatoes are really excellent, some of the best I've ever tasted, and the packaging is BPA-free, which no canned tomatoes currently on the market can boast. Quite simply, this is one of the best choices you can make for cooking tomatoes.
