I had been using Muir Glen Organic whole/diced tomatoes, but after having had cancer I read a lot of research publications indicating that BPA's estrogen mimicking effects can be quite dangerous. BPA found in cans with acidic foods are some of the worst since the chemical is leached out even more. The same is true of plastic containers with BPA -- acid, heat or surface abrasion lead to much greater leaching into the food.

Although Muir Glen is promising to get rid of BPA in their can liners, they are replacing it with some unspecified 'vinyl-based substitute'. If you want to get their cans without BPA, look for a use-by date of around the summer of 2013. [This info is per a conversation with their customer service representative.]

I had heard about Pomi Tetra-pak products before -- Mario Batali and other foodies/chefs have recommended them so I thought I would give them a try.

The tomatoes are naturally grown in Italy without pesticides and have no salt added. I used them to create a wonderful marinara sauce. They taste great and I am very happy with the quality.

I am so happy to be reviewing and working with tomatoes that are not in cans! That alone impresses me about Pomi tomatoes. Cans make me nervous, I shy away from them whenever I can for health reasons. Also, there are no preservatives, the tomatoes are low in sodium and BPA free. The tomatoes are naturally grown in Italy without pesticides.

I made a lasagna with both the strained tomatoes and the chopped tomatoes and it was the best lasagna I have ever had! The sauce was absolutely delicious, rich and fabulous. It was my first time making a lasagna sauce from scratch and I was worried it was going to be boring but it was zesty and stunning.

Just last night I made my chili recipe with the chopped tomatoes. Sometimes canned tomatoes can be quite tough and hard to break down but these broke down perfectly. My only complaint is that the chili was a little dryer than usual but it was richer with an even deeper flavour thanks to these tomatoes.

I would have bought these solely based on the fact that I could get tomatoes not in cans but after tasting the results of these fantastic tomatoes in my lasagna and chili... I will buy more.

I really wanted to love this brand because I liked the fact that it is BPA free and not packed in tin cans. I have now purchased and tried 4 different Pomi tomato products - different times and from different retailers - and I don't like the taste at all. I found the taste of the Pomi products to be consistently unappetizing. There was no fresh tomato taste whatsoever. The product was actually dark in color, and did not look like fresh canned tomatoes or tomato sauce (my Mom and Grand both canned fresh tomatoes and sauce, so I know what fresh looks like and tastes like). Additionally, there was way too much sugar in the Pomi sauce and the chopped tomatoes products. (Who wants sweet spaghetti sauce???) No matter how much fresh garlic, onions and spices I used, it was very very difficult to disguise or compensate for the poor taste of the Pomi tomato products. Just threw out the last batch of sauce. Will not repurchase these Pomi products. Yuck.

Pomi tomatoes are so good and will really enhance your family recipes. My husband and I discovered Pomi several years ago, but have always had a difficult time finding them. When we saw them at our local market we would buy several boxes. Unfortunately, we have been unable to find them for a while and had used our "stash" we had put back. My husband said to me, you said you can find everything on Amazon! Please see if they have Pomi Tomatoes. Low and behold I checked and bought a case of our favorite tomato. The down side was that they were not prime qualified and I do try to only buy prime qualified products. But I broke my own rule in this case because these delicious Italian tomatoes are so hard to find.

If you love to cook as I do, especially Italian, try the Pomi tomatoes. I promise you will not want to use canned tomatoes again!
