Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

A Literary Guild and Doubleday Book Club selection in cloth, this high-spirited historical romp set in such places as Victorian England and Civil War-era Virginia is sweeping in scope if somewhat lacking in depth. One million first printing.

From Library Journal

In the Victorian countryside, irresistible Lizzie, daughter of a sin-obsessed vicar, and Adam, the poor but nobly connected local "hunk," consummate their love. Despite Lizzie's pregnancy and a favorable upturn in Adam's fortunes, circumstances drive the two apart into liaisons with others and heroic adventures on several continents--adventures which underscore the great events and issues of the 1850s and 1860s. Backdrops include British stately homes, Napoleon III's Paris, antebellum Virginia, Civil War battlefields, and New York's worlds of theater and high finance. Stewart's characters, of every national and racial origin, are unconvincing as human beings and unsympathetic. His women are sex objects and/or ninnies, angling for monied protectors. Yet plot elements such as family secrets, adultery, blackmail, murder, politics, religious fanaticism, and nonstop lust are adeptly orchestrated by this best-selling author. This is a colorful package that will find many takers.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very good!, August 12, 2002
This review is from: Pomp and Circumstance (Signet) (Paperback)
I've had this book lying around the house for many years, and never got around to actually reading. I assumed it would be one of those novels that is short in its pages, but would take forever to plow through. I was quite wrong. Not being much of a fan of Victorian era England (or per chance, Regency), I was surprised to enjoy the English parts when they popped up.

I did, however, subtract a rating star because of all the plotline in India. These parts seemed to drag on and on, and I didn't much see the point in having them in the book anyhow.

Don't be fooled by the cover. A little less than half of the book deals with America and the Civil War. I was disappointed that there wasn't more of the antebellum south in Pomp & Circumstance, but the rest of the story (minus India) more than makes up for the lack of detail in this area.

Bottom line: A book definately worth reading and recommending.

3.0 out of 5 stars Mildly entertaining, March 10, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Pomp and Circumstance (Signet) (Paperback)
Entertaing novel about star-crossed lovers who experience a vast array of events in England, America and India. The two protagnonists are charming, but not very interesting and the plot is well paced, but somewhat lacks credibility. Yet, the author's take on the Indian Rebellion of 1857 is shoddily written. He should have done more research on India during this period.
