More About the Author

Lisa was born in Chicago on Easter Sunday, 1960. She grew up in Romeoville, Illinois. As a child, Lisa spent many hours reading, mostly the Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew mysteries. She says, "I remember feeling like I was Nancy Drew when I read the stories." She enjoyed writing science fiction in high school English classes and became a huge Star Trek fan, but pursued a business degree in College. She graduated from Lewis University with a Bachelors Degree in Business and entered the workforce.

In 1995, Lisa and her husband Greg welcomed the arrival of their son, Justin. It was at this time that Lisa made the decision to stay home and take care of her new bundle of joy.

When Justin was about seven years old, the idea of Pond Punkies came about while sitting around the pond in her backyard. It took many years and help from several people before Pond Punkies became a published work. Now she writes in her home office with a window over looking the pond always wondering if the Pond Punkies are close by. She says, "The best compliment I receive is when a child comes up to me and asks me if Pond Punkies are really here. Then I know I have succeeded in reaching their inner imagination."

She lives in Morris, Illinois with her husband Greg and their son, Justin. Her faithful companion, Augie, a mutt the family rescued from a shelter, is always keeping her feet warm under her desk. She is currently working on the third book in the Pond Punkies series and completing the Pond Punkies Trading Card Game, Legion.

My son was really excited to get this book since the author came to his school, but he started reading it and put it down before he finished the first 10 pages. Yikes. But on a plus note one of his friends read it and really liked it, so go figure.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pond punkies is fun!, November 10, 2011
This review is from: Pond Punkies Book One: The Arrival (Hardcover)
The 3rd to 5th graders really enjoyed reading the first book in the Pond Punkie series. They were always asking to check the book out. The book keeps the reader excited enough to keep reading. The setting is very unique. This book is a great introduction to science fiction. The web page to this book is filled with great, free activities.Lisa Riebe, the author, is a super, generous speaker. Be sure to buy this book for your 3rd grader and above.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pond Punkies, July 4, 2010
This review is from: Pond Punkies Book One: The Arrival (Hardcover)
Pond Punkies by Lisa Riebe and Cynthia Nunn is not the type of book that I would normally pick up to read. It caught my attention because I wondered what my third graders would think about it. I'm always on the lookout, especially for book for the boys in my classroom because they seem to be just a bit tougher to find reading materials for (at least some of them). Let me say, though, that the girls enjoyed this book, also.

As an adult reader, who admittedly hasn't read much science fiction, I wanted more details about the characters and how they lived on Neptune. Four inch Pond Punkies seemed so "out there," but then that is what the authors have created. My students say, "But, Mrs. Gilmour, ANYTHING can happen in science fiction." So I guess things don't have to make sense to this adult reader. Kids will accept the unbelievable.

As a teacher, I appreciate the fact that on the Pond Punkie Website, there are student/classroom suggested activities. Teachers are always on the lookout for already-prepared materials that correspond with literature. This is a real plus for this book since the materials are offered free of charge (always a plus!). This makes the book a valuable resource for classrooms. I know that my students will be looking forward to more books in the series.
