Most Helpful Customer Reviews

Format: Paperback
This has to be one of the worst equine books I have ever stumbled across and, since it is targeted towards kids and their parents, one of the most dangerous.

This book is full of inaccuracies and demonstrates incorrect equine handling. Even the front cover has a picture of a disaster waiting to happen -- unless, of course, that kid's parents WANT pony to bite off a few fingers!

My son brought this book home from school and we read it together. After we finished it, I contacted the school library, asked them to remove the book from their shelves and volunteered to buy them a better book to replace it. It's that bad.

A Small Sample of the Treats Inside Are:
* pictures of ponies being lead with the kid walking in front of the animal
* pictures of kids with leadlines wrapped around their hands
* pictures of kids feeding ponies with their fingers in just the right position to be bitten off
* pictures of ponies incorrectly cross-tied
* text proclaiming that bashkir curly horses are ponies and that they are a common pony breed.
* text proclaiming that "pinto" is a breed of pony
* text proclaiming that ponies show their teeth when they might bite and said text is accompanied by an illustration of a pony demonstrating the Flehmen response.
* text proclaiming that ponies roll because they are happy
* text proclaiming that all ponies need shoes
* text proclaiming that lots of fresh grass is good for ponies

If you are looking for a good pony book for you or your kids, I highly recommend you go to the United States Pony Club web site and see what they have on their Young Reader lists.

Barring that, here is a recommendation from me: My First Horse and Pony Book: From Breeds and Bridles to Jophpurs and Jumping
Most awesome book and one I bought for my kids.
