Book Description

April 23, 2007
Native Americans used Okwata, meaning "wide water," as a shortcut for inland trade between the Gulf of Mexico and the Mississippi River. When the Europeans arrived, the original inhabitants showed them the route--the settlement near the river became the city of New Orleans, other lakeshore communities grew, and Lake Pontchartrain continued to be a vital waterway well into the 20th century. Aside from its economic value, Lake Pontchartrain was a cultural mecca: Mark Twain wrote about it and jazz sprang from its shores; locals and visitors traveled out to the amusement parks and opera pavilions, simple fishing villages and swanky yacht clubs, forts and lighthouses; and majestic hotels and camps perched precariously over the water. In Images of America: Lake Pontchartrain, photographs document memories of a time that not even Hurricane Katrina could erase.

4.0 out of 5 stars Lake Pontchartrain(LA) Images of America, August 9, 2007
By
This review is from: Lake Pontchartrain (LA) (Images of America) (Paperback)
As a New Orleans native I greatly enjoyed reading and looking at the photos in this book. I thought that the book was very entertaining and brought back memories of my childhood home and what structures are remaining on the shores of Lake Pontchartrain. I would definitely recommend this book to nostalgia buffs..

4.0 out of 5 stars Big Subject, September 11, 2010

This is a great book! It covers the whole of lake Pontchatrain - a huge subject. There is quite a bit of history covering New Orleans' reaching for, and then expanding out into the lake. Leaves me wanting more; like Pontchatrain Beach, the Navy Air Base, the seaplane factory, etc.
Given the size constraints, though, the book does a great job giving an overview of the history of the ares.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful!, November 10, 2010
By
This review is from: Lake Pontchartrain (LA) (Images of America) (Paperback)
My dad worked for over 30 years at the University of New Orleans. Riding with him to hang out at his office, or later, to help build electronics stuff for him, started me down the road of loving the lakefront. When I began high school (Brother Martin), he'd still take Lakeshore Drive to get to Gentilly from Metairie, then we'd go down Elysian Fields so he could drop me off.

Catherine's book is a wonderful retrospective on the lakefront. It sits on the coffee table, where i can pick it up and reflect fondly on many a pleasant Lake Pontchartrain experience from my life.
