Book Description

Recounts the legend of the Pony Express, from its first trip from Missouri to Sacramento in April of 1860 until eighteen months later, when financial difficulties, the telegraph line, and the Civil War caused it to collapse.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 6-9-- This brief book summarizes the short-lived history of the Pony Express, galloping along with chapters dealing with the route, the riders, and even the horses. An effort has been made to balance the more exciting and adventurous stories with information on the men behind the enterprise and the reasons the service was started. However, the business aspect is a little confusing, and the book has a few redundancies. On the whole, though, this is a straightforward account for a slightly older audience than Conrad Stein's The Story of the Pony Express (Childrens, 1981) or Joseph DiCerto's The Pony Express (Watts, 1989). The index is merely adequate, and the suggestions for further reading include many old titles that would be difficult for most students to find. --Todd Morning, Schaumburg Township Public Library, IL
