Book Description

February 5, 2007
The Poodle is known for her keen intelligence, excellent trainability, and, most notably, those signature curly locks. But there’s more to the Poodle than meets the eye (like, say, those expensive grooming bills). So, to Poodle or not to Poodle? That is the question.

With an overview of the breed’s history, an exploration of all three varieties (Standard, Miniature, and Toy), and 8 pages of full-color photos detailing the colors available and tips and techniques for grooming, Poodles for Dummies is filled with all the meaty information and enlightening morsels you need to decide if this refined beauty is a good match for you. You’ll get answers to your most important questions, including:

  • Which size Poodle is best for me? Which color?
  • How do I know if a Poodle breeder is reputable?
  • What are the pros and cons of shelters and rescue groups?
  • What do I look for in choosing a healthy Poodle?
  • How can I Poodle-proof my home and yard?
  • What’s the best way to introduce my Poodle to kids and other pets?
  • How often does my Poodle need grooming?

No matter which size, color, or gender you own, Poodles are not a “wash ‘n’ wear” breed. But if you have the time, passion, and dedication to give her the training, exercise, and upkeep she needs, you and your curly companion will have a happy and rewarding life together.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Basic Book, January 11, 2012
This review is from: Poodles For Dummies (Paperback)
The "Dummies" books follow a sort of basic pattern. There are funny cartoons and the approach to writing the material is simple and straightforward. POODLES FOR DUMMIES is no exception. It's got very funny cartoons from 5th Wave, and Susan Ewing has done a good job in covering all the basic Poodle info plus a little more.

The beginning of the book is a little weak and somewhat repetitive, but after the first few chapters the organization tightens up and by the end the book the author is covering some material that I haven't run across elsewhere, like alternative medicine for dogs.

An excellent introductory book. The writing is easy enough for interested tween and teens.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must read for Poodle owners, September 16, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Poodles For Dummies (Paperback)
Like most of the "...For Dummies " series, this book answers all the questions and addresses all the issues a poodle owner would have and does so in a logical, concise and humorous fashion.
From the attractive color pictures of the various kinds and colors of poodles to the clever cartoons and illustrations, the book provided information in an easy to understand format . The icons used to hi-lite salient portions of each section are very useful, especially when re-reading a section for reinforced understanding.
While there is a certain vague familiarity with some of the prose (Where have I read that before??), I found the book virtually indispensible to me in acquiring knowledge about how my new family member thinks , acts and needs.
For me, it is a must- have addition to my dog library.
