3.0 out of 5 stars
there are many other MUCH better poodle books, June 14, 2008
This review is from: Poodles (Paperback)
(2 stars, not 3)
I bought this bcs I wanted info on obedience training. Thought there might be info specific to training poodles for obedience since they are the smartest of all dogs.
Overall, it was a disappointment.
Hats off to the author on origins of the poodle (cited iconography! rockin'!) and also the etymology of the name (differentiating btw caniche and barbet, and so on; most authors use these terms interchangeably). Excellent material.
As you would expect, the standard discussion of the breed standard. Hard to do much with that!
The selecting the puppy section obviously is a boilerplate chapter. Ditto "new family member" and "care." In fact, so is the rest of the book!
The last part of the book was heavily-product placement. Despite the disclaimer otherwise. I was not impressed. Repelled, in fact.
Cheap paper, poor color separation.
In all, not much here about poodles! Not a good purchase. I would return it if I could. I wouldn't even offer it used bcs content is not "as advertised."
Now that I think about it, 3 stars are too many. 2 is more like it, but there doesn't seem to be a way to "downgrade" the stars!
If you want poodle-exclusive info (and presumably you do!), look at:
1. POODLE (Fogel, DVM; DK Publishing); part of a dog breed series, but 90% poodle-specific. Beautiful pictures! Esp helpful is the chart where dog characteristics re compared btw poodle sizes, all poodles, all dogs: barking, house-trainability, gentleness with children. (See also his book on how dogs think: THE DOG'S MIND; Howell Book House).
2. POODLE (Clark, Kennel Clubs). Again some boilerplate-type stuff, but pretty well poodle-slanted. Lots of good pix!
3. HOW TO TRAIN YOUR POODLE (Palika; TFH Publications) Palika is a very famous dog trainer, and her section on training is very good. Lots of good pix, too.
4. COMPLETE POODLE (Dahl; Howell Book House) is the gold standard. If you want poodle details, here's the place. Lots of info on breeding, whelping, etc. 100% poodle-specific. Pix not as good bcs they're B&W, but still cute poodles! Lots of line drawings showing body shape under all that hair, etc.
There is also a book, POODLES (Schwarz, TFH Publications), but I not know anything about it.
For a "beauty" book with tons of sweet pictures and really good info, go with the Fogel, Clark, and Palika. For all-about-poodles-all-the-time, go with Dahl.

For obedience, go with Strickland's EXPERT OBEDIENCE TRAINING FOR DOGS (Howell Book House). This woman "knows her onions." Very specific, very detailed, very applicable, very everything! No stone left unturned or unexplained. Truly superb. This is a must if you are doing (or starting) obedience work.
TRAINING YOU TO TRAIN YOUR DOG (Saunders; Doubleday) is the obedience standard (and she had poodles). Some of her training ideas seen unnaturally severe. She was my aunt's godmother and I was always partial to her book, but now that I've gotten back into obedience training, I much prefer Strickland's approach. I have the 1952 edition of the Saunders, and the clothing is a real hoot. I don't know if there is a newer edition - surely there must be. If so, perhaps some of the draconian techniques ("punish your dog") have been rethought.
Forget SMART TRAINERS - BRILLIANT DOG (Lewis; Canine Sports Productions)! Awful book! Waste of money! Tons of stuff on Thorndyke and Skinner and operant conditioning; discussion of positive/negative rewards in abstract situations (not dogs), etc. Very pedantic. Not much applicable stuff, and certainly not for poodles! And most definitely not poodle-centric, as all quality dog books must be, obviously! See more on my review of this book.
Enjoy your poodle! Best dog ever to tread the earth.
