Book Description

A Monster Haven Story, book two

Zoey Donovan--empath, wedding planner, go-to girl for monsters with personal problems--has been marked twice for pickup by Death. On both occasions, Riley the smoking-hot reaper has refused to follow through. For his breach of protocol, Riley is now on probation. For her refusal to die on schedule, Zoey's right to live is challenged. She will have to undergo a life-or-death trial, but she won't know when or where it will happen...

Staying alive might not be so difficult if the Leprechaun Mafia hadn't strolled into town. Now every business owner with the slightest connection to the supernatural community is being threatened with the most appalling bad luck if they don't pay up. Mirrors are smashed, bodies are dropping, and Zoey's still got clients waiting for fabric samples.

With a little luck, she might be able to save everyone and still have time for a second attempt at a decent first date with her favorite reaper.

Find out how it began in Monster in My Closet, available now!

4.0 out of 5 stars Not too stupid to live November 6, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I usually have a problem with main characters who consistently do things that I would never do - but in this case the author has done a very good job of grounding the character's behavior in such a way that her actions are reasonable from her viewpoint and not blindly stupid. I've read all three of the Monster Haven Stories so far and have really enjoyed them.

4.0 out of 5 stars Better than the first. April 13, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
This book was better than the first. Because now that we are all aboard the wacky supernatural train that is Zoey's life, we are zooming full speed ahead. The governing board of the Supernatural Community has their eye on Zoey and are waiting for her to either prove she is an Aegis or for her death to catch up with her, all the while spying on any time that she and Riley have together. Problem is, Zoey doesn't know what an Aegis is or how to prove or disprove she is one. Add in the fact that the Leprechaun Mafia is targeting all the businesses in the area that are run by humans, but with ties tot the supernatural community and poor Zoey is having a very bad week.

Zoey is the kind of best friend anyone would want. She is kind, tough, smart and just weird enough to make you laugh and shake your head in wonder what she will think up next. I like that though she tries her best, a lot of the time, it is a group effort to get her out of the trouble she seems to find herself in. She relies on her friends, and they know that they can rely on her in turn. I gave this book 4 stars.

This is again a series where its difficult for me to do reviews for. I have the same problem with the Kate Daniels series and Mercy Thompson. As the series goes on, there is just stuff happening that has to be read in order and I hate spoiling. So I'll keep it to the characters.

Zoey, I still love you. She is just so cute. We are now really starting to see her grow into her role. The one she never asked for. She is making some decisions that are long reaching. Before, she would just basically go with the flow and deal with the monsters and how stuff was happening. It was more of a reaction to everything. Now she is starting to be more in a active role in her life. She wants answers, she is learning to say no and taking charge. Its really nice to see.

Its also nice to see her relationships grow and how she is realizing that all that crazy is now her family.

I also like that her friend and business partner is finally becoming more of a character and is not in the dark anymore. This gives the opportunity for them all to be working together. Kind of like the crew on the TV show "Grimm".

It will also be interesting to follow the bigger story line that opened up in the last part of this installment. Very intrigued.

** read March 2014

5.0 out of 5 stars Probably my all time favourite series ^_^ April 21, 2013

If last year, when I was reading the first novel in this series I was still unsure if I should dare to name it like this, now - after a sequel and a short story, I can say without doubt that A Monster Haven Story series is one of the best stories I've ever read!

I think this time, it's not the action that grew my enthusiasm to maximum limits. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that the action is not fascinating or that the plot is weak. On the contrary! But there are other reasons why these books impressed me this much. First, it's the fact that reading this sequel I remembered that for years I believed that there is a parallel universe populated by every magical being we imagine and every crazy idea we have. It seemed impossible that all those creatures born in our mind and all those imaginary friends we create when we are children could only live in our imagination. No, they surely have their own world where they appear and live since the first moment we create them. It has to be like this, otherwise the universe would be extremely sad, boring and uninteresting. And the community of supernatural beings described by the author in A Monster Haven Story reminded me of that world of incredible creatures. There's something so natural in their existence, so casual and normal that when you start reading the story, you get back a part of the soul you had as a child and thought it was lost forever.

The second thing that fascinated me is the way the author builds the characters, their emotions, the feelings that grow from their interactions and the relations created between them. I think that not even when I was reading love stories full of romance and depth, the affection, care and tenderness weren't flowing from those books the way they are flowing from the novels written by R.L.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Series!! June 5, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
I am really enjoying this series and I am so glad that I am finally getting a chance to read it. I really love Zoey and all of her Hidden friends. While there were a ton of laugh out loud moments in this book, I felt like it was also a lot more serious than the first book. For a book that boasts a lot of ridiculous accidents, a leprechaun mafia and a trip to see the board that governs the Hidden, there were some pretty somber moments and some angry ones too.

Zoey learns a lot about who she is, who her mother was and where her mother has been all these years. In this book, she’s also cursed with bad luck that is so bad that she isn’t expected to survive it. I love the way bad luck is used in this story. The leprechaun mafia uses it as a way to injure or kill people who won’t pay their protection price. Also in this book, we get to meet leprechauns, a pooka, and some gremlins just to add to the already interesting list of Hidden creatures that we’ve met so far.

I love the mix of fun and serious in this series. You never know what’s going to come next even if you think you do. This is definitely getting bumped up to a must read series. I can’t wait to continue and I look forward to trying other things by R.L. Naquin once she’s finished Zoey’s story.

More About the Author

Rachel's head is packed with an outrageous amount of useless Disney trivia. She is terrified of thunder, but not of lightning, and often recites the Disneyland dedication speech during storms to keep herself calm. She finds it appalling that nobody from Disney has called yet with her castle move-in date.

Originally from Northern California, she has a tendency to move every few years, resulting in a total of seven different states and a six-year stint in England. Currently, she's planning her next grand adventure. Rachel has one heroic husband, two grown kids, a crazy-catlady starter kit, and an imaginary dog named Waffles.

She doesn't have time for a real dog.
