2.0 out of 5 stars POOLS ARE LIKE LIFE... April 2, 2012
Format:DVD
This is another Risky Business type movie. Two cousins end up at a mansion belonging to someone else, running an escort service. Young naive Alex (Brett Davern) has a crush on one of the escorts, Laura (Rachelle Lefevre) who claims most of her clients don't want sex. Matthew Lillard plays Roger the underachieving cousin. Tom Arnold plays himself. George Takei (Sulu) has managed to score himself a role as a gay. The plot was predictable, characters shallow, and humor light. If you are having a bad movies by National Lampoon film festival, you could sneak this one in and no one could tell the difference.

F-bomb, sexual references, silicon nudity (Simona Fusco, Jennifer Walcott, sign language girl)

4.0 out of 5 stars MUCH BETTER THAN EXPECTED September 19, 2011
Format:DVD
I heard there is a release date for this film for Sept. 30, 2011, but I had a chance to see it at a screening already. I will admit I went with much trepidation, but by the time the film was done, I had a good time for two hours. This is definitely a genre film, in the vein of ANIMAL HOUSE, RISKY BUSINESS, and AMERICAN PIE, and even some NIGHT SHIFT, thrown in. But every film falls into some kind of story structure, and POOL BOYS is no different.

This film is good-natured and is meant to be a feel-good film. Matthew Lillard and Rachelle Lefevre are quite good, actually making you care about their characters, and John Billingsley is a hoot as the Dean everyone wished they had. The party that wraps things up, is hilarious and worth the price of admission.

This film is what it is and doesn't pretend to be anything more, and it succeeds admirably. The film is never mean or hateful to its own characters. Enjoyable.

4.0 out of 5 stars Laughs that make a splash January 13, 2012
Format:Blu-ray
Hilarious movie! One word: statue. And I have never held the Olive Garden to the high esteem I now do - omg, too funny! Matthew Lillard and Rachelle Lefevre were great in this and I really love all the old favs like George Takei and Tom Arnold that make some of the scenes in the film so memorable. Efren Ramirez - the dancing is priceless. For the guys, plenty of hot chicks scantily clad - Patricia de Leon and Sheena Lee and a ton more. All-in-all a fun way to vegge out and let off some steam for an hour and a half. Definitely will see again and again!

The movie was hilarious..a total riot!! It has a great cast of comedy actors, (Mathew Lillard, Efren Ramirez, Tom Arnold, Brett Davern....). its definately a cult classic in the making!! For the guys there are plenty of gratuitous sexy girls, Rachelle Lefevre and Sheena Lee make a splash in this comedy classic!!
I saw it on PPV also, this was one of my favorite comedies this year!

There have been a million teenage sex romps made through the years, and there will be a million more. With such a vast pool (no pun intended, okay--maybe it was intended) to choose from, it becomes increasingly difficult for a film to distinguish itself from the enormous pack. "The Pool Boys" is a lightweight endeavor that may certainly appease those looking for something familiar and comfortable. I would never compare this film to "American Pie," but the DVD proudly proclaims the distinction "From the Creators of American Pie" as it wishes to cash in on that film's popularity. To my mind, "The Pool Boys" plays more like the slapstick cousin of "Risky Business" minus any element of realism. It's pure silly escapism--harmless enough if you like that sort of thing, but lacking any real cleverness or outrageousness. The movie tries for shocking craziness, but it carts out tired cliches, stock characters, and expected sight gags that feel cobbled together from a dozen different movies. The actors certainly try to sell it, it just doesn't seem particularly fresh.

Brett Davern plays a recent graduate who, thorough a twist of circumstances, comes to Los Angeles to work a summer job for his successful cousin (Matthew Lillard). Of course, Lillard might have been overstating his success story and is really just a pool cleaner. The two start working together for a roster of wacky and eccentric clients, but a new business opportunity soon presents itself in the form of a squeaky clean escort (Rachelle Lefevre). Before you can say "prostitution comedy," the trio have holed up in a Hollywood mansion and solicited the locals for a wild sex party. Of course, if you've seen any number of these movies--nothing will come as a surprise to you.
