2.0 out of 5 stars NOT the best book to buy., May 14, 2005
This is my first Amazon review, but I feel compelled to share this experience with others.

This book as said to be for the professional and the novice. It was said to contain all the information one could possibly need. It was suggested that you could take what you want from the weighty tome, and leave the rest. In reality the book is clearly NOT written for a new pool owner. In fact, its not written for an experience pool owner. The book was written for a pool repairman. Moreover, it does not contain the practicle information a pool professoinal would require to steer clients toward pool products.

Which cleaner should you get- Vacume or pressure driven? No answer here. What about a heating- Solar, oil, gas? No advice, no direction....

In fact, the book reads more like the diary of a pool man. About how one manufacurer was driven out of business by refusing to compromise quality, or how he cared for the pool of come Malibu celebrity.

Having recently purchased a home with an in-ground pool, I have read three books so far, and gotten quite and education. This book however failed in almost every regard. Finnally, the book deliniates ways of making money of customers as a pool professional. Information I simply have no use for.

Lastly, it bears mentioning that there is a quote on the book jacket from another Amazon reviewer "If you want to buy one book on swimming pools this is it!" Why not a quote from a noted pool authority or publication? Why quote some anonymous amzazon.com user like you or me? Most likely because there were no favorable reviews from newspapers or magazines.

This book was more then a waste of 30 dollars. It was also a waste of time. Unless you need to know how to change things like light fixtures in to pool. The book is not awful, so I gave it 2 stars, but I urge you to look elsewhere.

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Pool Maintenance Manual (Paperback)
In Arizona, pool care is a common teenage chore, just like snow shoveling in more northerly areas, so I'd had some pool experience when I moved into a house of my own. (Thanks, Dad.) This book will tell you everything there is to know about pool care. Other homeowners have complained that there's too much information, but I think the information is presented in such a way that you can skip the gory details. The author mentions that the chapter on water chemistry is optional, for example, but if you want details, they're there.

After we moved in, we had some out-of-town friends stay with us, and being from Chicago, they were curious about owning a pool. They were even more surprised when I could answer every question, from the workings of pool filters to pool chemistry -- I told them it was all in the book.

This book is about maintenance as well, and not just the theory of it. With this book on top of the pool heater (don't worry, the heater was off), I stripped my DE filter all the way down to the piping and cleaned it from top to bottom. If you want to know about pools, this is the book. You also get a different perspective on movie and sports stars -- you see them form their pools, as with the description of John McEnroe's pool filter. While not exactly cocktail party chatter, it does liven up the presentation.

I have purchased 4 books in search of practical reference for pool maintenance. This book is outstanding. In this genuine book the author offers a comprensive introduction and reference based on experience and intuition. It is well written and easy to understand.

5.0 out of 5 stars THE POOL MAINTENTANCE BIBLE, April 7, 1999
By A Customer

This review is from: Pool Maintenance Manual (Paperback)
Great book. I consulted this book extensively while consulting with my pool builder...I even bought him a copy. If you like delving into things, and don't have a Phd hydrodynamics, aquatic chemistry, or electrical engineering, this book will submerge you in swimming pools but not drown you. I also liked that he is opinionated...if he didn't like something, he said so and told you logically why. The book might help you avoid costly mistakes. If you want to buy just one book on swimming pools this is it. One criticism I have is the lack of detailed, critical discussion of alternative sanitizers i.e. sanitizers otherthan chlorine.

4.0 out of 5 stars help! i'm drowning in so much information, April 26, 2000

This review is from: Pool Maintenance Manual (Paperback)
Despite my title for this review, this is an excellent, very detailed manual that merits reading for those who are in the pool business or want a reference tool for things no one else seems to know or understand. The author is an expert in his field, so anyone can learn from him no matter how much they already know. That was my problem. Having bought a house with an inground pool, I had to learn fast and this book was the wrong one for me, initially. Nonetheless, it will stay in my library as a reference tool for troubleshooting.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book, with easy to understand explanations, November 6, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Pool Maintenance Manual (Paperback)
As a brand new pool owner, I wish I had this book as I was overseeing the pool construction!!! I found the explanations most informative. Helped me to understand the complexities of water chemistry. Great drawings and pictures! Covers everything from minor maintenance to major fixes. (some I would never think of tackling myself)

4.0 out of 5 stars good for a pro, not so good for a homeowner, August 22, 2004
By
trying to help (studio city, CA USA) - See all my reviews
this is certainly an informative book, but it is written for pool care pros. It speaks in the perspective of 'servicing your client' or...'based on your client's decision'...the problem that I had with that is that I sometimes turned to this book to help me make a decision on something. eg. I looked to the book to offer an opinion on solar heating systems and the section on solar heaters said something along the lines of, 'there are many kinds of solar pool heating options. once your client has chosen one, you can make extra money by contacting the manufacturer and learning how to service it for your client, although we recommend that you let the manufacturer handle the warranty repairs'...or something to that effect.

too much info that i didn't need and not enough that i did, and I'll probably have to buy another book.

not bad, just maybe not ideal for a non handyman homeowner who wants to learn the basics to keep from hiring a service.

hope that helps

5.0 out of 5 stars Truely everything you need to know about pool maintenance, June 18, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Pool Maintenance Manual (Paperback)
This book covers just about everything about maintaining and/or upgrading your pool equipment. It has very technical but clear information as well as basic troubleshooting problems. I am in process of upgrading my motor/filter and this book will save me money and aggrevation by doing it myself. You can often get wrong or misleading information from so called experts but this book will set you on the right track and you will become your own expert.

4.0 out of 5 stars Almost perfect... alomost, September 12, 2003
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This is a great book that explains the "whys" as well as the hows". Lets face it... what's the point playing around with water chemitry if you have no idea what is behind all the effects.

Why almost perfect??? It has no information on the benefits of a salt water pool/chlorinator. The more I've read elswhere, this seems to be a great way to go and I would have like to additional info on it in this book.

This review is from: Pool Maintenance Manual (Paperback)
Very detailed book on pools with US measurments. Not a guide on how to take care of your pool, but more of a deeper look at pools. From chemistry to construction, etc. Having this book at the pool store where I work at is very handy.
