Nice--if it stayed underwater,

I had a different brand before this one (& unfortunately can't remember what it was, because it worked great), but left it out over the winter, resulting in cracked plastic. I saw this & assumed it would work the same...it does do a great job of pumping out the water, but the problem it, it won't stay under water! I have to weight it down with a rock to get the entire thing to stay submerged--seems a little ridiculous given that staying underwater is the entire point, since it's necessary for the pump action to work. Disregard the "how much fun" & "how educational" ratings above--for some reason Amazon pops this up as a toy, which it isn't.

Tastes great less filling, just about sums it up. I bought this item to replace a similar one bought 5 years ago locally that had finally started to fall apart. All the local pool shops wanted from 30 to 40 dollars for similar products and one place, a supposed discount pool store, wanted 30 dollars for this exact item. Don't understand the negative reviews here. Yeah it took a minute or so for the air to run out of the central part the first time it was placed in the water but it did eventually sink and stays at the bottom of any standing water without a problem. And the other complaint about the weak suction on the bulb I don't get either, yeah it needs a good deal of pumping the first time you use it when the line is filled with air but during subsequent uses when there is already water in the line it only takes one or two squeezes to get it going again. Great product. just leave on the cover all winter and whenever there is standing water on the cover just walk by and give the bulb a few pumps and the water will be gone in an hour or so.

Don't waste your time and money on this product. The siphoning doesn't work properly and it's very cheaply made. We'll be returning this product.

I bought this product to drain the water from our pool cover. The pump was not strong enough to suction the water out. I barely got the water to drip out. Do not waste your money or time. We returned it.

This product was a piece of junk. The cheap plastic pump did not even have enough suction to get water above the edge of the pool. It felt so cheaply made that I felt like I was going to break it with each squeeze. The hose came with so many kinks I had to snip off a quarter of it.

I'd rate this about 3-1/4 stars. Give it points for the wide, flat, weighted base and general effectiveness as a drain. The base has multiple small holes so it doesn't get stopped up with leaves. Hose length included is sufficient. The plastic siphon pump is frail and useless. However, when used as a drain it's very adequate for the task. Recommended. Two caveats: 1) Start the siphon the old-fashioned way, by sucking the water part way into the hose, as the plastic priming pump simply doesn't work well AND tends to come loose (just toss it). 2) The weighted base could be a bit heavier; it floats up sometimes. However, place a 1 gallon weighted bottle (say, an empty pool shock bottle filled with sand) on it and it sets down perfectly. I found that it works a bit better when placed upside-down. I bought two of these and once primed, they can drain my entire pool cover (33x18) in a few hours. At this price (<$14), I would buy this item again simply for the nice weighted drain base and drain hose attachment. It works well enough as is.

I got a bunch of water on my winter cover when putting it on since I didn't have a helper. Electric and battery powered pumps seemed excessively expensive. I got this one, opened it up and connected all the fittings together. I put the weighted thing into the water and draped the tubing over the side of the pool. There was enough tubing that I didn't need to hook it up to a hose. Squeezed the bulb as directed for a few minutes and nothing happened. I checked the tubing and the water only went up the tube a few inches. Each time I released the bulb the water would drop back down. I spent an hour trying various things and nothing worked. I ended up pulling the bulb off and sucking on the end of the hose till the water started flowing. If I had known this, I wouldn't have spent $20 on a piece of plastic tubing I could have bought from a hardware store for a couple dollars.

I was ready to drag out the electric pump, extension cord, hose. Hesitant because I once burned a hold in the cover and almost emptied the pool. Decided to try this. It was much more substantial than I thought it would be. The weight of the product was more than heavy enough to stay under the water and on the cover. It took a while to get the pump going but when I got towards the ground it started flowing easily. I removed the primer and just let the water flow from the hose (it's a bigger flow). I moved the hose twice and in the mornning the cover was more than sufficiently empty. Very good product for the money without all the work of an electric pump. I have a 24 foot pool and there was a lot of water weighing down on the cover.

I bought this to keep the water off of the top of my pool cover and it works great except we need to use our wet/dry vac to get it started...the squeeze piece to get it started doesn't work like it should.
