Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

In Poor Leo's 2002 Computer Almanac, Leo Laporte tries a new approach to teaching novices about computers and the Internet. Rather than walk the reader through increasingly complicated features in an ordered way, he uses a casual style to explain pieces of novice-level computer knowledge in almost random order. Without an artificial structure to get in the way, it's possible to absorb information more naturally as you read along. On the other hand, if you have an immediate problem with something specific, you can look in the index to see if Laporte touches on it.

Every entry in this book is headed with a date in 2002. The idea is that you turn to the entry for the current date and absorb a nugget of knowledge about personal computing. Some of the daily nuggets fill most of a page; others occupy only a few lines. Sometimes the entries take the form of procedures, such as the one for turning off pop-up ads on AOL. Other times, they're definitions--one entry explains what a "buffer underrun" is with respect to CD-ROM burning and offers some suggestions on preventing such errors from taking place. Interestingly, none of the tips has an illustration. Laporte relies on his writing--which gets to the point without being heavy (he calls personal computers "beige spawns of Satan" at one point)--to share his knowledge of and enthusiasm for personal computers. The only big complaint: this book is pretty expensive, as introductory computer books go. --David Wall

Topics covered: The skills everyone needs in order to make use of personal computers (those running Mac OS, Windows, and, to a lesser extent, Linux); the Internet; and popular peripherals (such as digital cameras and CD-ROM writers). Hardware problems, operating-system customization, and Web surfing get a lot of attention.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for the new geek!!, December 10, 2001
This review is from: Poor Leo's 2002 Computer Almanac (Paperback)
I just picked up Leo's new book. I'm a huge fan of him in general so I knew I would enjoy his book. I didn't go through the book like I was supposed to, I just read the entire thing. I am a huge geek so I didn't learn tons from the book. But Leo didn't write this book for people like me. He wrote it for the average Joe who checks their email and chats. THIS BOOK IS PERFECT FOR THEM. Tips abound in this book. Pluse you get the insite and whit of Leo and we have all known and grown to love. If you are an Alpageek and want to learn a lot from this book it may not be for you but if you love to tweak and tinker and you are the average PC user then GO WITH IT!!

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent book for the novice computer user or true geek!, December 23, 2001

The book is designed to be read a little at a time, beginning on January 1, 2002 and ending on the last day of the year 2002. However, I picked it up to skim through it and could not put it down! A very good book! It is full of very useful information that is helpful to new computer users, MAC users, and even the true geeks who think that they already know most of what they need to know. There is something in it for everyone! This is a book that I will read again and again. It is also a very useful resource I am sure that I will turn to from time to time. I highly recommend anyone who has a computer, or plans to get a computer read this book!
