Very Useful and an Entertaining Read,
By
This review is from: Pop Chinese: A Cheng & Tsui Handbook Of Contemporary Colloquial Expressions (Cheng & Tsui Asian Dictionary Series) (Paperback)
I've been studying Chinese for many years, and most Chinese learning books aimed at English speakers either rehash beginning Chinese lessons or present material that's a crashing bore after five pages.
"Pop Chinese", on the other hand, presents very timely vocabulary in a format that makes this book as readable as a novel. Examples are drawn from popular TV shows and literature, and it's all very relevant to the way that Chinese is really spoken in the real world. Unlike many slang dictionaries that feature vocabulary that's either very specific to the city of Beijing, or is circa 1950, the vocabulary here is very, very current. This book is perhaps a little less useful to a beginner or intermediate student of Chinese, as the example sentences aren't transliterated into Pinyin. But for an advanced learner this book is a real find.

complete, to my knowledge. besides, the book has both simplified and traditional characters. I wished they had pinyin on the example-sentences too.
