The product was very easy to install and works beautiful.

It gives me a feeling of a little security in that at least they will have to work a little to break into my truck.

I ordered the PL2310 and found that the metal handle is too thin where the lock cam engages, and doesn't.

I ordered this item because it was the least expensive alternative to lock my 2001 Ford Ranger tailgate. Let me begin by saying that I am not a professional mechanic. However, I consider myself very mechanical. I am 66 and I have repaired things my whole life beginning at about age 10 or 12. So, I feel that I have above average mechanical ability.

This item is not an easy bolt in modification for a 2001 Ford Ranger. Perhaps it would be for another year/model of Ranger but not for mine. The first thing I did after accessing the tailgate release mechanism and trying to bolt in the Pop & Lock was to get back on the net and check to see that I had ordered the right model. I did this because the unit would bolt in but it was almost impossible to turn the key the required 90 degrees in both directions to lock and unlock the tailgate latch.

I had to grind away about 25% of one of the latch assembly stud heads to provide proper clearance so the key would turn. I then also had to slightly bend the locking lever and reshape (grind) the end of the lever so it would seat properly in the recess in the tailgate latch release handle. All of these adjustments and modifications required that I mount and remove the whole assembly approximately 2 dozen times!

All this said, the unit does work smoothly after my mods. However, it is only a deterrent to theft because it can be forced open rather easily.

I would not recommend this to anyone who is not mechanically inclined or who is short on patience or imagination.

This is a good, solid, lock for a 2008 Ford Ranger Tailgate and if one follows the instructions it is pretty easy to install. The trick is to make certain that the lock is properly aligned with the latch on the existing talgate handle and that it is in the lock position while installation is taking place. In any case, you will need a 10mm socket-wrench and star-torx security bit type screw driver or bit-head for disassembly and reassembly of the Ford Ranger Tailgate Latch and to install this Tailgate Lock.

That is the only caveat before purchasing this device that you know there are specialized tools necessary to install it. If you do not already have these tools then you could buy them for between 20 to 30 dollars maybe cheaper if you already have a wrench and security bits set. In any case, this tailgate lock is one I recomend. it is relatively easy to install and does lock the tailgate and easily unlocks with the turn of a key and does not feel flimsy, and does not look bad although on my Ford Ranger the lock is a little bulkier looking then it is in the picture shown for the product. With the right tonneau cover this will provide a lockable pickup bed. Worth the price.

Before ordering this product, I called Pop & Lock to verify that the PL2310 would fit my 2004 Ford Ranger. Everything fit find until I tried to unlock the tailgate and could not remove the key. The recess portion of the tailgate handle was keeping the Pop & Lock from turning all the way to the unlock position. In order to get it to work I had to grind a section of the tailgate on the right hand of the handle so that the PL2310 would unlock properly and the key could be removed. After this modification, the PL2310 worked perfectly. If Pop & Lock would redesign the lock bracket and lower the lock by 1/4" on the bracket the need to grind the tailgate could have been be avoided. Other than this, I am very happy with the product.

and easy to install. To echo a few others here, first, make sure this is for your model truck w/the black plastic handle. Second (and most important), remove the "dust cover" from the existing tailgate handle. Leave the cover in place and you'll have to carve out enough space to fit the latch... oh, and use a marker on the push rods so you'll be able to reconnect in the proper place (watch the video & you'll see what I mean).
BTW, this only "locks" the passenger side latch, but seems to be enough to secure the tailgate, even w/a pretty good tug.

This tailgate lock installs easily, but you must be patient. Having never taken apart my tailgate, I had to slowly lay out the parts, carefully read the instructions and not be in a hurry. I am quite mechanically inclined and confident in what I do. Even so, I had to study the parts, read, and methodically install it. The instructions are well written. To understand, you must identify each labeled part in the instructions to know what goes where. For my 2006 Ford Ranger, I needed a torx wrench, socket wrench and screw driver. All parts fit well and no custom work was required. I gave it five stars because everything was there, fit well, with no problems.

I purchased the Pop & Lock for my 2011 Ford Ranger Sport and when I got it, I was worried because it said to take the tailgate access door off - WHEW! Well, it was the easiest installation ever - and it works GREAT. It gives me a feeling of a little security in that at least they will have to work a little to break into my truck.
Thanx for an excellent inovation.

Install: I installed this lock on my 2004 Ranger without any problems. 3 minutes I spent taking the access cover and I won't exaggerate if I say it took me 2 minutes to put the lock and handle back together.
I saw a few reviews where people had to grind and cut and take the wheels off (well maybe not that last part) to put this thing together but I really don't see an issue if all rangers are built the same (which I think they are).

So unless the handle assembly is not the same for previous or later ranger models, I would recommend this product for its easy installation.

Protection:As far as protection, I didn't want to pull on the handle too hard but I did try to force open the tailgate with the lock on and it held on pretty well. I have a bed cover on so I hope my tools and stuff will be a little more secure now.

Price:at 49.00 I think it was a bit too much but then again I have pretty valuable stuff on the back and now people can't just open the tailgate and just take my stuff, so that's how I got around the price tag.

Looks: And lastly the aesthetics, this thing sits flush under the handle so you can't really see it and it doesn't interfere with the handle at all.
