A must for any synthpop collection!,
This review is from: Pop Muzik (Audio CD)
If Robin Scott read some of these past reviews, he would probably pass out from the intense irony of the situation...he puts out a cd with many very strong tracks on it, then has to read about how bad everything is because people are only familiar with the one song which is actually a parody of itself. To sum, if you only like songs that you've heard 1000 times on the radio/mtv, then you too will be disappointed in the rest of this CD. However, if you love synthpop like I do, this is one for your collection.
I would suggest people listen to this CD more than once thru before slamming the rest of the disc. Sadly, I see my daughter do the same thing with her music. She listens to the one track she has heard many times, completely ignores the rest of the CD, then says the rest is no good. Of course she is only 9...what is everyone else's excuse?

What are U people talking about?!?,

This album is probably the best aural experience you will ever have. When I was a kid, I played this until the needle went dull. 26 years later it's still the best.

I first heard Pop Muzik when I was five years old. I was too young to know who the artist was so after years of searching, I finally got my hands on this wonderful compilation. The interesting thing is that I was fairly certain that since "M" was a one-hit-wonder, I would like "Pop Muzik" and "That's The Way The Money Goes" (the only songs I ever saw turned in a video)and that the rest would be dregs But... I got a real surprise when I discovered songs like "M Factor" and "Satisfy Your Lust", which have an incredible bass and catchy lyrics. All around, this is a great album, and a must have for fans of the then up and coming new wave movement. Robin Scott (whom other posts stated is German, hes actually English) brings a variety of styles into his music, making this a very eclectic album and featuring samples of disco, punk, new wave and all around creativity of the late 70's early 80's music scene.

Not A Great One,
By Sam Fisherman "Sam" (Honolulu, HI) - See all my reviews

Reviewing an album like Pop Muzik by M is a tricky affair. On the one end of the spectrum there are hardcore fans who will attest to the albums greatness. But I, for one, do not hear what they talk so highly about. I do like a lot of music, many of which would be considered rubbish by many and some in line with those who are hardcore. I was familiar with the title track "Pop Muzik" which I really liked back in the days. Unfortunately, it is the only good track along with the remix version that is included. I really liked this song and still find it to be a good danceable track. Unfortunately, one track does not make an album. The rest of the songs are simply rubbish in my opinion. These tracks would not make the cut if they were written by other artists. It does kind of remind me of classic David Bowie music but it stops there. Don't get me wrong I do love David Bowie's material. It's just that even from that standpoint I did not enjoy the rest of the album. If you are purchasing this album for "Pop Muzik", you are better off just downloading that track. Listen to the other tracks before you make your mind because we all have different tastes in music. Even those who share similar interests in music have differing tastes within those genres.

however THIS edition is on the "COLLECTABLES" line - well, as the other ones from this company I have purchased it sounds like they transferred the vinyl right to a CD burner in a living room.
This is a MONUMENTALLY great recording - Moonlight and Muzak / Woman Makes Man ! Genius. DO NOT BUY THIS ONE - there are other releases however I did not look further into the catalog on amazon when I purchased this 2nd rate rubbish - so I am returning and reordering. RADIO DISCO BROTHERS

Interesting compilation,
By VertigoXpress (USA) - See all my reviews

This was noteworthy at one time for being the only way you could get most of the album "New York London Paris Munich" on CD. The differences make it an interesting collectable; it omits the updated disco medley of "Moderne Man/Satisfy Your Lust", and presents both songs in their original format, when both tracks were split into a 7" single. It is an odd choice, since both of the songs are recorded in a style that owes more to glam rock than disco, and they sound at odds with the rest of the tracks. This isn't an album proper, however. It also contains the original B-side to "Pop Muzik", "M Factor", and this particular compilation remains the best way to own that track (the eventual issue of "New York London Paris Munich" on CD contained a wealth of bonus material, but the bonus tracks are all linked together and contain little fragments of one another at their beginnings and ends).
I don't really understand why another reviewer complained about the sound quality of this disc, because I never noticed anything bad about it. Now that "New York London Paris Munich" has been released in a more deluxe package, you may want to pick that version up instead of this one. However, diehards will want that version of "M Factor" with the proper intro.

Others have commented on the style and genre - great nostalgia here, and certainly worth owning. But - for those who own the original LP - aren't some of the track versions different? The standout is "Modern Man" - it's not the original from the LP. Anyone know where one can get the original tracks from the LP on CD? Correct me if I'm wrong.
I'm right - scouted around a bit, and found the original version of "Modern Man" here: http://www.amazon.com/Pop-Muzik-Very-Best-M/dp/B000005RFD/ref=pd_krex_fa_t Interesting. Get both. :)

M is great- but Amazon is not stocking the right one,

The CD you want to get is from Westside in London. They include all of the tracks here plus 13 bonus tracks- its awesome! Contains rough totally fantastic versions of "Satisfy your lust" and "Moderne Man". Has both single versions of "M Factor" and interesting (good) versions of other songs. It is one of the most thoughtful compilations I have ever come across and Westside should be congratulated.Yes, M (Robin Scott) is a "one hit wonder" and the original album is dated- but gloriously so. We are talking 78 - 79 after all. There are the definate tell tale pop/disco synth-symphonic sounds in the original cuts- but thats why you are getting the album, right? The bonus tracks are (mostly) totally off the wall and even reminded me of the Residents or Devo at times! So when ordering- have Amazon get you the Westside WESM501. NO- I don't work Westside. Cheers.

So Catchy and cheesy its awsome.,
By Jonathan Candelaria (Over Here) - See all my reviews

This music is full of hooks and catchy melodies and lyrics. Some of its funny, some isnt. M seemed to be one of the few artists with a true sence of humor. The music is very cool and synth-heavy. Not for the average 80s fan. My personal favorite is Made In Munich, it has no audio clip at amazon. Its an awsome disco song. The CD is awsome. I love it. Although I do admit in its weirdness, I have to play certain songs in front of my friends, for fear of them judging me by my tastes in some of the strangeest music out there.-Dont get me wrong, this is a classic synthpop album, and hasnt left my CD Changer since I brought it home. Its a great album: not for everyone--but really awsome.

OBSCURITY IS THE PRICE OF NON-CONFORMISM,
By Foot Artist (Houston, Texas United States) - See all my reviews

This albums pre-dates NEW YORK LONDON PARIS MUNICH, which has more tracks. Some are new some are old. In this album, the song MODERNE MAN/SATISFY YOUR LUST is a one song. In NEW YORK LONDON PARIS MUNICH it is two songs... SATISFY YOUR LUST is X-RATED. In a lot of ways Robin Scott is Germany's answer to the All-American B-52's. Most people think the B-52's and M are pretty mindless. But I beg to differ. If you have a few bucks to spare treat yourself to POPMUZIK. Consider it a taste of the late 70's. A time of fun, carelessness and hedonism like you wouldn't believe! If you weren't there, sorry - you missed it. But for those of us who lived our teen years in that decade it'll be a trip down memory lane. (For more details see my review of NEW YORK LONDON PARIS MUNICH.)
