I already have enough pop-up how-to books that fill me with envy and despair, so I like this one for its classical, theoretical approach. The book's playful design offsets the obvious effort it takes to really learn something and own the knowledge. It feels like somebody's workshop rather than an art gallery--a place for learning what one needs to know to have this craft serve one's own imagination. The author has been teaching paper engineering for 20 years, and it shows.

Making pop-ups can be easy!,
This review is from: Pop-Up Design and Paper Mechanics: How to Make Folding Paper Sculpture (Paperback)
I am the author of this book. Over the years I've noticed that many people find accurate measuring the most difficult and off-putting aspect of making pop-ups. This book explains a simple way of making complex pop-ups without measuring. I hope you enjoy it.

I just spent the morning sitting in bed perusing this book and I suspect that the creator of this book is a very clear thinking and generous person.
The lay out and design of the book has been well thought out. The simple pop-up examples are visually beautiful and the instructions are simple enough for a six year old to understand. The sections are simply laid out, it reminds me of a really well designed cookbook. I am most impressed by the 2 page "Materials List" and was surprised to realize that I have all the tools I need on hand to begin a simple project immediately. As well, a 2 page section explaining "pop-up sketching" has invaluable strategies for any artist...and I want to include writers, musicians and film makers in this category. I've always envied pop up design but felt the learning curve would be too much of a time investment. I feel compelled to invest some time after reading this book. I know before I even undertake a simple project that I will be able to successfully pull it off. I love art instruction that is so clearly defined and accessible. "Pop-Up Design and Paper Mechanics" would be a great addition to any artist's library whether or not one ever sits down with paper and scissors and constructs a pop-up. |
