The Read to Me option reads the story aloud in a pleasant, English accent while highlighting words simultaneously, making it easy for children to follow along if they like. Children can touch a word to hear it spoken and repeat the full text if they want to hear it read over.

The Read Myself option allows children to read the text themselves while still offering the option to touch text to hear words spoken. This option is helpful for children still struggling with some words.

Sounds as Good as it Looks

A beautiful classical piano soundtrack accompanies a charming vocal performance mixed with the soothing sounds of birds, bonfires, and wind rustling through the fields.

In the very unlikely event that you're not familiar with her, Helen Beatrix Potter (28 July 1866 - 22 December 1943) was an English author, illustrator, natural scientist and conservationist best known for her imaginative children's books featuring animals. This app is a digital version of the Peter Rabbit story, a perennial children's favorite. You can read the story in either of two modes:

1. Read the book yourself.

2. Let a narrator read the book aloud (the narrator sounds like a young English girl, and she has a very pleasant voice).

The book is rated for children (ages 9 and under), and even preschoolers should enjoy it in the narration mode. The story is simple enough for very young kids to understand. In my opinion, it's as much fun for grownups as it is for kids. There are a lot of visual and sound effects that will have kids touching everything to see what happens, something they don't have in a traditional printed book. And the inventive interactive tabs are about as close to simulating a paper pop-up book as can be done digitally. The background music is a very pleasing version of Debussy's classic Clair de Lune that works well with the app without intruding.

I've reviewed a number of interactive children's books by several developers such as Genera Interactive, Oceanhouse Media, TouchyBooks, and all of them have been done very well, but in my opinion, Loud Crow Interactive has done the best job of creating an interactive book that holds kids' attention both with the storyline and the interactive features.

"The Tale of Peter Rabbit" has definitely raised the bar for interactive children's books.

Although my childhood is pretty much ancient history, this app is today's FAOTD and it has rave reviews, so curiosity prompted me to download it. I'm so glad I did--the beautiful illustrations alone are worth the download. You can read the story yourself or choose the narrator, who has a charming English accent. Each page is a visual treat; there are "sliders" that you can pull to see the characters act out the story; there are sound effects, including critters. No child could fail to enjoy this interactive book, and adults will feel a little of the magic of childhood. I understand that this is the first of a planned series, and I fervently hope to see more.

5.0 out of 5 stars PERFECT Bonding Opportunity April 8, 2012

What a great way to share the joy of reading with a child!

This app provides a perfect opportunity for you to bond with a child as you explore Beatrix Potter's classic tale and the beautiful illustrations of "The Tale of Peter Rabbit" together.

My favorite memories include being read to as a child. We would talk about the story and the illustrations as we went. This app takes that experience to a whole new level! The interactive features provide a great mechanism for keeping children invested in the story.

The music is soft, classy and soothing, as is the narrator's pleasant voice. She has an English accent; I think that is good to help children learn to understand and appreciate diversity.

Each word can be touched, and the word will be spoken very clearly. Children can use the app to read the story by themselves, improving their skills, and helping them to develop a sense of independence. Exploring the various features of the book will keep children wanting to come back for more.

I have a Kindle Fire.

What a beautiful presentation of a classic tale! BRAVO!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Blast From the Past April 8, 2012

The 6 year old me never would have dreamed she would be reading one of her favorite book collections in this way. I absolutely adored the Beatrix Potter books, and I had a ton of them.
This app stayed true to the original book, even down to the texture of the paper it used to be printed on. The animations were beautiful (also fun), and the music was soothing and lovely.
A great app, especially for Easter. I hope more books in the series become available in this manner.

5.0 out of 5 stars The little ones love it!! September 7, 2012

I've always sung the praises of these interactive stories for the little ones, and this is no different. The graphics are great, the interaction is intuitive, the sounds are great for children, the app is zippy, and the kids just love it to pieces. I've got about ten of these books and I think this is one of the better ones.

5.0 out of 5 stars well done ... but April 8, 2012

A classic tale of greed and consequences read by soothing female British voice. Well done. would be good to download and not clutter tablet, so I'll keep in cloud instead. Grand kids will love today. Fantastic faotd. Only other issue is size. I am a developer and this feels bloated at 50 meg's. Again great app. Issues not enough to reduce star count.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding app! April 8, 2012

Extremely impressed at how this classic tale was presented. As an adult with no kids, this was a bit nostalgic for me. The highly technical programming that makes the interaction effortless deserves an award in itself. You control the experience such as music on, off or level. You may also choose to read yourself, or be read to. You can click on any word in the book and it repeats it. Click on every critter, and it reacts. Pull/drag tabs for movement. Catch falling objects like berries, collect them and fill you screen, pick them up or rotate your Kindle or tablet so see them move in the direction on you turn. But the main point here is the story with it's wonderful vintage presentation. Turn off all the bells and whistles for kids learning to read, and reward them by reading again with it's fascinating features. I'm now off to look at other creations by this developer because after collecting about 200 apps, be it free or paid, this is by far one of the most creative. A free app on Easter, but if you missed it, it's worth every penny. Thanks for the memory!
