Book Description

September 2004
Ron English is a culture jammer and well-known pop painter. A seminal figure in the subvertising, or culture jamming movement, in which artists and activists subvert an existing advertisement to send out their own message or encourage free thought, English has pirated over a thousand billboards over the last twenty years, replacing existing advertisements with his own hand-painted ""subvertisements."" His paintings have been exhibited in galleries and museums worldwide, from Japan to Europe to the former Soviet Union; and included in prominent collections, including the Museum of Contemporary Art in Paris and the Whitney Museum in New York. Ron has designed murals for the Guggenheim Children's Fund and created an anti-drug campaign for the United Nations' International Drug Control Program in Kazakhstan. His art has been featured in such feature films as Breakfast of Champions and Basketcase II. This year, his art will be featured on the cover of the new release by The Dandy Warhols.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gotta love the art "terrorist", May 12, 2007

As an old 60s hippy, I can really appreciate this guy for his nonconformity and attacks on corporate propaganda. He's not only a talented artist, he's brilliant and not afraid to stand up for what he believes in. If more of us would stand up we could make a difference in our world. Do yourselves a favor and give this guy a look. There is also a DVD available that's very entertaining and insightful.

2.0 out of 5 stars Purveyor of the obvious., May 11, 2009
This review is from: Popaganda (Paperback)
Ron English, while a technically skilled artist, has the subtlety and wit of a college freshman art school student. Nothing the man says through his artistry is clever or unique in any way,nor is the use of pop culture iconography. He has a wonderful way of stating the obvious and beating you over the head with it repeatedly. Its unfortunate such talent is wasted on the most hackneyed subject matter one could muster up. Even the pop artists of yore were much more subversive than this candy coated audience pandering. What ever happended to abstract thinking in art?
Two stars for wonderful color plates.
