4.0 out of 5 stars Fun - incoherent, but fun, June 13, 2006
This review is from: Popbot, Book 6 (Bk. 6) (Paperback)
There's a lot going on here, and not a lot for the newbie to cling to. Maybe that doesn't matter, though.

The artwork is veried and enjoyable - most of it is harsh, angluar penwork with limited use of color, but parts of it verge on the painterly.

Story? Well, that's a problem. There are lots of one-page vignettes and a brief but cryptic story near the end. Robots abound, of course - for family fun, combat, and just about everything else. And, of course, there are endless adult entertainment opportunities, more hinted at than shown.

Maybe this series depends on continuity from one issue to the next, so any one snapshot of the series looks disjoint. The artwork is good enough to pull me back to see if that's the case. I enjoy the style, but I'm still looking for substance.

4.0 out of 5 stars Style, yes, but substance?, May 31, 2006
This review is from: Popbot, Volume 2 (Paperback)
The art attracted me to this book, a series I hadn't noticed before. Robots, babes, edgy art and subdued title typography, and a kitty - hey, even if there's no story, that can keep me going for a while.

The problem, I think, is that there may be a touch toomuch story, spread out over volumes that I haven't read. There's an alternate universe out there, with WW4 "in its final and tumultuous months" during 1984 and with a burgeoning robot industry looking towards a post-military product line. The cute kitty appears in a brief interlude, and we find out that he's some kind of perv. Oh, and Andy Warhol puts in an appearance. I'm not sure it makes narrative sense (I'm not sure there's a narrative), but his jagged streaks of stark white hair goes well with the jagged streaks of the stark artwork.

So, I'm not quite sure what I'm looking at, or how much that matters. I'm not quite sure how much I like it, but I do like it some. It's a fair first-time experience with this series and with the artist (Ashley Wood), and good enough to bring me back at least once or twice more.

i bought this one out of order but the art was so good, i couldn't resist! when i catch up with the story, it'll make more sense, but it was worth it to buy it and not know what was going on.
