Cute story, keeps us entertained,
By Matt Hetling "Matt" (Bethel, ME USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Popcorn: A Frank Asch Bear Story (Hardcover)
This is a cute story about a young bear named Sam who is left alone in the house on Halloween when his parents go out to a party.
Sam decides to throw a party of his own, and he dresses up in a costume and invites all of his bear friends over. Each friend has individually come up with the idea to bring a package of popcorn, and after having some fun at the party, someone gets the idea to pop all of the popcorn together in a big black kettle. The popcorn soon fills the house, and the young bears spend the rest of the night eating popcorn in order to fix the problem. After Sam cleans up, his parents return home with a gift for him-popcorn. I liked this story a lot when I was a boy; it's fun to see the different costumes of the young bears and the different varieties of popcorn they bring (a bear dressed like a ghost has "spooky tooth" popcorn). The idea of a house being completely filled with popcorn is exciting (later recreated in the movie Real Genius), and the cartoonish illustrations provide a strong visual. I'm not sure that this book is particularly instructive or informative, but it is very fun, and I think most children would come back to it time and again.

By Nick Wiskirchen (USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Popcorn: A Frank Asch Bear Story (Paperback)
I like this book because it deals with something that kids will understand. his parents leave for a party so the kid bear has a party of his own. every guest brought popcorn and he decices to fix it all and it fills up the house with popcorn. They eat all the popcorn and clean the house so his perents never know what happened. his parents came home and they brought him some popcorn. This is a great story for kids around the halloween time

I haven't even seen the book for twenty years or more, but this morning I woke up with the idea that Popcorn, by Frank Asch, would be perfect for trick-or-treaters this Halloween. Popcorn, with all of its costumed bears and the house that fills with popcorn, was my favorite book for years. You can ask my mother. I am so sorry to hear that it is out of print.

Both of my children loved this book. We wore out the first copy and had to rebuy it because it had been loved to tatters. My 21 year old son still has his well-loved copy in his bookshelf. I hope it comes into print again because it is a charming and engaging read-aloud story.

This fall themed book is a storyteller's delight.,

This review is from: Popcorn: A Frank Asch Bear Story (Paperback)
The young children in our library storytime just seem to love this fun and engaging story. Our children identify with Asch's little bear who decides to make popcorn and have a costume party in the absence of his parents. The make-believe situation becomes an incredible disaster when little bear does not seem to realize how much the popcorn expands when popped. He miscalulates and soon he, his house and his guests are buried in popcorn. You have to read this title to find out how he manages to clean it up all up before his parents find out. I'm sorry to see this title currently out of print. When introducing topics such as corn, indians, and the harvest, this Asch story gives parents and storytellers a wonderful gentle educational fall alternative to ghools and goblins. We always follow-up this great fall storytime theme by serving popcorn to all the storytime children.

What a Good Book!,
This review is from: Popcorn: A Frank Asch Bear Story (Hardcover)
Frank Asch was on my entering kindergartners Summer Reading List (they simply stated "anything by this author") and to tell you the truth we were not familiar with his work. "Popcorn" changed all that. My 3 year-old son loves this book and my 5 year-old daughter likes it too.
Mr. Asch has a real talent for finding topics that children find fascinating. In this case, there were two topics: Halloween and popcorn. Essentially, the other reviewers are right. This is a good, if not great, book for children that they will read (or have you read) over and over. **See also, www.frankasch.com for the author reading some of his stories. My kids just loved it!

One of my daughter's favorite books,

I bought this engaging book two years ago at a neighborhood garage sale for a mere ten cents and it immediately became one of my nearly three year old's favorite books. She has three older siblings and we have read this book to her at least a hundred times! I am sorry to hear it is out-of-print because any child anywhere would enjoy it. Hey, I love the book as well and I'm a jaded adult. The book teems with creativity and imagination and very young and impressionable kids will wonder if popcorn would really fill up an entire house! The pictures are adorable and fun to. Look for the little inquisitve mouse on each page and the cat as well. A wonderful book. Frank Asch has done it again. I'd put my book up for auction but I can't bear to part with it. Maybe in 10 years or so....

One of the greatest childrens books of all time. Many of my gereration grew up on this book (late 70's early 80's). I got this book for my own children and they cherish the adorable, funny story and artwork as much as I do...well almost as much! Unfortunatly it is out of print. I have many parent educator friends request and ask where they can get a copy...bring it back!!!!

This book was at my dentist's office growing up. I read it every time I went there, up until I was a teenager. It is a great memory for me, and now that I'm getting ready to have a child of my own, this is definitely a book that is going into the library.

Strong Eyes,

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Popcorn (Mini Edition) (Paperback)
You will need either very strong eyes, or thick glasses to read this because it is SO small. I was NOT happy with what came. I knew it was a mini book, but even small things are required to have some amount of quality. This was not quality. It indeed feels like a color copy that someone threw together with a few staples. Shame on the publisher for allowing this treatment of such a wonderful children's book.
