Great book with lots of insights into the personality of Pope Francis.
Transcendental Thomist
And he brought this to the other person with a very refined charity, a charity of gestures.

I have read several biographies on Pope Francis and they all did a fairly good job covering his life up to his accepting the chair of Peter. While covering the basic facts rather well and giving some measure of the man, I really did not come away feeling I knew him at all really.

This new book put out by Ignatius Press is more than just another biography. Pope Francis - Our Brother, Our Friend: Personal Recollections about the Man Who Became Pope by Alejandro Bermudez is something a bit different. The book is a series of interviews of people who knew him as a priest, bishop or both. While some basic questions were asked of each person this lead down several pathways in intriguing ways.

The first half of the book were interviews of Jesuits and I found these interviews the most interesting. These interviews for me gave me more of the measure of the man. Especially since all the Jesuits interviewed were not exactly Jorge Bergoglio fanboys. There were plenty of back-handed compliments considering Bergoglio theological orthodox in that he was not considered "adventurous" enough. You could certainly read behind the scenes that some of these Jesuits considered this a defect in what they thought was an otherwise goodman. Still there a a common thread of great respect for the man even from his theological adversaries. He seemed to have won them over not by pretending that these theological differences did not matter, but that he could deeply care for and be concerned with a person he had fundamental disagreements with. This fact was evidenced throughout the various interviews interviews.

Some of the questions asked were what you would expect since they were the hot button ones concerning his life as a priest and then bishop.

Pope Francis - Our Brother Our Friend : Personal Recollections about the Man Who Became Pope by Alejandro Bermudez is much more than a typical biography. This book is a collection of interviews conducted with those who knew Pope Francis before he was elected Pope. Priests and Bishops, professors, journalists, laymen and even a beggar are those who were interviewed about their experiences when he was simply Jorge Bergoglio.

The idea of the book being filled with interviews to me, makes this a very insightful read. Unlike a biography, the interviews allow the reader to see an intimate portrait of the subject from those who had firsthand experiences with him. This is definitely a unique approach but in the case of Pope Francis it gives the reader incredible insight on the thoughts, views, and actions of our new Pope.

Rabbi Abraham Skorka (co-author of On Heaven and Earth), multiple priests (either students of, or professors of the Pope), friends, co-workers and even a beggar round out those who were interviewed. While reading through each of the interviews you see a pattern of common traits. The accounts of these traits which we see in Pope Francis today prove how genuine his actions truly are.

In this book you read about his compassion for the poor and his work in the slums. In another account from Father Ignacio Perez del Viso, you will learn the truth about the accusations against Jorge Bergoglio and the alleged handing over of two priests to the government.

Father Angel Rossi states his reaction when he first saw Pope Francis come out on the balcony of Saint Peter's: “I was simply petrified, frozen a mixture of immense joy and of profound surprise, considering his advanced age and certain ailments.

This was a very enjoyable, inspirational and helpful read, to see the future Pope Francis through the eyes of those who knew him in various phases of his life in Argentina. Their stories help to fill in many of the gaps that you can't get in journalistic articles and to explain some of the harder-to-understand parts of his biography. I would have loved to have some interviews with those who knew him prior to his entering as a Jesuit novice, but you can't have everything. What it does have helps to portray a picture, as if you were sitting with a bunch of friends of the now Pope letting them regale you with stories.

A nice little book of multiple interviews with Jesuits and lay people about
their personal experiences with Pope Francis before he was pope. They
all concur that what we see today in his words and actions are his normal
ways of proceeding. It is most encouraging to read that his simplicity and
humility of many years standing have extended into his new role --- and
to see, from other readings, the appetite the world has for the example of
a good and holy person. I have reduced my rating to four stars only because,
as would be expected, there is some repetition from account to account,
which has me skipping bits of text.

How wonderful to get to know Pope Francis through the many different people who have known him for so many years. I was especially impressed with his close relationship to Jewsih leaders, and to the many examples of his humility. Pope Francis will truly change the world.
