Product Description

The object of the game was for Popeye to collect a certain number of items (24 hearts, 16 musical notes, or the letters in the word "help" - depending on the level) while avoiding the Sea Hag, Brutus / originally Bluto (Brutus was the name given to the character in the King Features cartoon series, Popeye the Sailor) and other dangers. The player can make Popeye walk back and forth and up and down stairs and ladders with an 8-way joystick. There is a punch button, but unlike similar games of the period, no jump button. (Conversely, Brutus can jump down a level and also jump up to hit Popeye if he is directly above.) Each level has a can of spinach. If Popeye punches the can, he becomes temporarily invincible and can knock out Brutus just by running into him; although after a few seconds Brutus will swim back out and be ready for action again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another well-ported arcade classic, November 22, 2010
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Popeye (Video Game)
Popeye is an arcade game based off of the old television cartoon show (which is still being watched on Boomerang, by the way). While the game didn't really grow as popular as games like Donkey Kong and Pac-Man, it was a cult classic.

You play as Popeye, and you must catch whatever Olive throws down (Hearts, music notes, H E L P letters). Each level has Olive throwing down different things. Of course, there's also Bluto trying to get in your way. If you get close to him, it's likely that he will throw wine bottles at you. You gotta break them by punching them. If you get farther in the game, a witch would probably come and throw skulls at you, too.

Each level has different gimmicks. The first has nothing, actually. The second level has a seesaw you can use to reach a platform unreachable by doing everything else. The third level shows Olive being captured by a bird. The bird is another obstacle which you can hurt by punching.

Graphics and sounds are faithful to the arcade game.

Overall, it's a great arcade game that fits in well with the NES.

1.0 out of 5 stars SNES game, September 10, 2008
= Fun:1.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Popeye (Video Game)
I remember this game as a game i used to play at the arcade when i was younger. I was never aware that it was sold for the Nintendo deck as well. I was so happy to come across it in my search for oler Nintendo games. When i recieved it i found that it has really bad graphics even for an 8-bit game. It is very hard to control the charachter as he always gets stuck when climbing stairs and other obstacles. The arcade version was one of my all time favorites. I spent many hours and a good portion of my allowance playing the arcade version. But i dont recommend this version of the game to anyone.
