Magical sisters Ai, Mai, and Mii and robot-maid Mea travel from town to town in a magical house, talking to dandelions and helping people with their problems, in this 2003 broadcast series. A weird mixture of saccharine sentiment and gratuitous nudity, Popotan is based on a hentai computer game. In "Secret House," Daichi, an elementary school boy, wants to take pictures of ghosts so he can reassure a classmate that her mother's spirit visited her. The sisters help him, and Daichi ends up in the bathtub with the overendowed Ai. The other episodes follow the same pattern, juxtaposing mawkish emotions and fan service nudity. Unagi the ferret resides in Ai's ample cleavage, and little Mii is always talking about the size of her sisters' breasts. Popotan feels like an episode of Hello, Kitty restaged for the Playboy Mansion. (Rated 16 and older: nudity, risqué humor) --Charles Solomon

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun Show, Bare Breasts, Good Animation, December 12, 2004
By
This review is from: Popotan - Vanishing House (Vol. 1) (DVD)
Popoton is about 4 women (3 sisters and a maid) with weird magical powers who travel around to different areas looking for Popotons (tonpopo's actually, which is the Japanese word for Dandelions). There is definitely something odd about the 4; they seem to have magical powers (for instance, Ai can talk to flowers), and what happens at the end of every episode is the house they live in takes flight, pretty much in the same manner as the dandelion spores, as they travel on their way to the next location.

Each episode is a self contained story which usually involves them helping someone who has problems. The first episode is a boy who is trying to help a girl in his class prove ghosts are real. The second is actually assisting one of the women in the house, Mai, as she hates the feeling she gets when she moves from area to area and loses the friends she's made along the way. The third involves a little girl sick in the hospital who can't go outside or leave the hospital due to her illness. The fourth episode is a little girl who is alone (I can't say anymore as to avoid spoilers).

Animation is high quality stuff (for a TV series anyway). Japanese voice acting is spot on and the show is just a lot of fun to watch.

Mii is played by Momoi Haruko, or... better known as Komugi from Nurse Witch Komugi and The Soul Taker. The character she plays resembles Komugi, actually. They even give her an episode where she Cosplays as a magical girl.

There are also plenty of bare breasts and other various fan service related bits to be found.

What surprises me is the 16 and up rating. I guess it's for the bare breasts, and the bare breasts aren't REALLY shown in a lewd/perverted manner, at least not in my opinion. Other than that, this show is definitely aimed at a broad range of folks, I mean, I think I'd be hard pressed to find a young kid who couldn't enjoy the themes in the show. It's a light hearted show with warm and caring characters... with some bare breasts thrown at you from time to time.

So Popoton gets a high recommendation from me. However, if you don't like cute shows, stay way.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great anime with lots of heart, December 13, 2004
This review is from: Popotan - Vanishing House (Vol. 1) (DVD)
Not since "Chobits" has there been an anime full of human heart and spirit...so "Popotan" is a breath of fresh air for those who want more emotion than action or violence.

As much anime as I watch, this is one of the most creative ones I have come across in a while. The main story revolves around 3 sisters who share a source of magic, one of them which commuicates with dandelions (or 'popotans' in this case). Does it sound fluffy ?? You bet cha ! But I loved it anyway.

The reason this bright little anime works is because it takes real human emotion, tugs at the heart strings, and gives you a sense of well being within its story content.

Sadly, this anime really should be for the 12 and up crowd - but parents will want to approach with caution and take heed of the 16 and up rating, because some amounts of nudity are present..and it does not hide it very well - nor would it want to. It presents itself as a "free spirited" animation, but never is vile or offensive in any way. The nudity only adds more for comedic moments.

I certainly hope some parents will allow their children to view this series. Not only can the young ones learn something about human life - but it will also help out older viewers in trying to 'understand' it...and I can't say that about any other anime out there.

Great stuff made with tender loving care ! Don't miss it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Interesting Anime, December 7, 2004
This review is from: Popotan - Vanishing House (Vol. 1) (DVD)
Its pretty good, the "Excessive Nudity" warning on the back cover has some truth behind it... hehe.

I even found Easter Eggs. Go to any episode selection and highlight the "Preview" text and hit right once or twice to highlight two different alternate previews. There's two for each episode.
