Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Kindergarten-Grade 2-The popular pig returns in a new series of adventures. The three short chapters revolve around familiar rites of spring: cleaning, shopping for a new bicycle, and sleeping in a tent in the backyard. Here, of course, each activity ends with the usual Poppleton twist. His attempts to clear his house of clutter bring more items in; too many choices at the bike shop overwhelm him and he decides he can walk or run about town; and after a wakeful night in the tent, he sleeps all day. The text is just right for beginning readers and the lively illustrations offer plenty of visual clues and a touch of the absurd humor that appeals to this set. An irresistible addition.

Review

This fifth storybook about Poppleton, a genial pig, contains three min-tales set in a well-manicured country town populated by a cast of equally genial animal friends of our hero. In the first vignette, Poppleton spring cleans and, inevitably, ends up with more superfluous possessions than he had at the outset. In the second, he decides to buy a bicycle but is overwhelmed by all the choices available in our prosperous consumer society. The final tale, about Poppleton's sleeping out in a tent on a lovely spring night, is the drollest of the lot. The collaboration between author Rylant and illustrator Teague is seamless, and their lightness of spirit is reminiscent of the late Arnold Lobel's Frog and Toad books at their best. While not strictly speaking easy readers, text and pictures are so closely knit that graphic clues will help children to decipher unfamiliar words. This paean to the trials and pleasures of everyday life will please Poppleton afficionados, old and new. -- From Parents' Choice® --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars Poppleton books are the best!, April 9, 2009
I wait anxiously for each of the Poppleton series to be released in paperback and this was the latest offering. I happened upon the first book (Poppleton) at a used book shop when my son was small, and he enjoyed the first book so much I looked for more. We have worn out the copies at the library and purchased all the ones that are available to buy. I only wish the author would write more about Poppleton and his intriguing community of friends. The books are humorous and entertaining everytime I read one aloud to my son--we've been reading these since he's 2 and since he's 6 now he can read them himself. I highly recommend this book as well as any other of the Poppleton series.

Another gem from Cynthia Rylant! Great blend of sweet and silly. My six year old can read some of it, but it is neither simplistic nor boring (like so many "early readers").
