Book Description

4 and upPoppleton
Revisit three wonderful stories from Newbery medalist Cynthia Rylant and award-winning illustrator Mark Teague--with new cover art and design!

In this easy-to-read chapter book, Poppleton the pig charms young readers with his quirky adventures and whimsical ideas! Poppleton grows an icicle garden and ends up with an icicle fence instead. He sculpts a bust of Cherry Sue without explaining his constant visits just to look at her face. And he wonders why he can't find a friend to go on a sleigh ride with. No one can go, because they're all preparing Poppleton's birthday party!

These hilarious stories feature simple language, everyday experiences, and beautiful illustrations--perfect for beginning readers!

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

Poppleton the pig knows how to make the most of a season's offerings. In three short, charming chapters, Poppleton deals with fallen icicles, makes a bust of his llama friend's head, and enjoys a very happy surprise birthday party. Young readers will giggle at the changing expressions on the characters' faces as they carry on their misadventures and comedies of errors.

The eighth title in Cynthia Rylant and Mark Teague's popular Poppleton series (Poppleton in Spring, Poppleton Has Fun, etc.) will be received with open arms by the many fans of the portly porker. An excellent way for kids to move into early chapter books, the series features simple language, funny, easy to follow vignettes, and appealing watercolor illustrations of Poppleton and his motley crew of friends (Patrick the finch, Cherry Sue the llama, Hudson the mouse... you get the picture). (Ages 4 to 7) --Emilie Coulter

From School Library Journal

Grade 1-3-Pink and portly, this personable pig makes his eighth appearance for beginner readers. Poppleton's fans will need no urging to join in his concern over fallen icicles, his exacting venture into the art of sculpture, and the joys of a surprise birthday party catered by his loving friends, while children meeting him for the first time will likely scamper to the library to find the earlier titles. Teague's sunny illustrations enhance Rylant's cheery text, and youngsters can only sigh with satisfaction when Poppleton makes no birthday wish because "He had everything already." A delightful choice.

5.0 out of 5 stars As always, Poppleton is a joy to read, November 17, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Poppleton In Winter (Paperback)
This latest book of Poppleton is just as sweet and gentle as the others, and it is easy reading for my 2nd grader. You can't go wrong with this book. "The Bust" chapter is the funniest with Cherry Sue, in which Poppleton wants to sculpt a bust of Cherry Sue, but can't remember what she looks like. "The Icicles" chapter in which he meets a clumsy little finch, Patrick, and the "Sleigh Ride" are also good-natured stories that bring the feel of winter to the reader which is perfect for the upcoming snowy season.

When reading these with my young son, I felt all the warmth and foibles of real friendships. I enjoyed them as much as my 6 year old. Heartwarming and charming.

5.0 out of 5 stars We love Poppleton!, November 19, 2008

My second grade students love the Poppleton books. There is just the right touch of humor. I read the books to them as each season comes. They can't wait for me to put them into the sharing shelves. Poppleton the pig is a likeable character who has little adventures and delimmas to solve. It is written in early chapter book style- with each chapter being it's own little story. We have all of the Poppleton books and wish there were more! With Cynthia Rylant and Mark Teague as author and illustrator you can't go wrong!
