Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 3–5—In this lovely and fitting conclusion to a popular series, Poppy's husband, Rye, dies, and the grieving deer mouse refuses to see anyone. Then Ereth needs her help, and in the process of saving the porcupine, she is thrown into the air and flown to a cave by a young bat. Thinking she is dead, Ereth plans her funeral. Meanwhile, a fire breaks out in Dimwood Forest. Seen through animals' points of view, the story takes readers through Poppy's adventures, including being aided by her former enemy, Bounder the fox, as she tries to get home to warn the others of the danger. Ereth stays true to his character—pompous and curmudgeonly—yet devastated when he thinks he's lost Poppy, while she remains the eternal optimist and, in the end, is able to move on with her life. This heartwarming fantasy is filled with fast-moving action and danger, and has themes of friendship and loss. Fans of the series will be completely satisfied.—Kira Moody, Hunter Public Library, West Valley City, UT

From Booklist

In this sixth and final adventure in the Poppy series, the dear mouse’s husband, Rye, succumbs to pneumonia, and Poppy is accidentally flung into the air and carried away by a young bat. Ereth the porcupine concludes that Poppy has perished, and begins planning her funeral. Poppy’s grandson Spruce, less convinced of her demise, sets off to search on his own. Series fans will enjoy spending time with these endearing characters, and the end leaves the door open just a crack for further adventures. With much series backstory woven into the narrative, this stands alone; but fans won’t want to miss any of these tales. Grades 3-5. --Kay Weisman --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

I have loved the Tales from Dimwood Forest series for years. Unlike many children's books published these days, Avi's series is just as enjoyable for adults as it is for children. Poppy and Ereth, the final book in the series, is a fun, heartwarming and bittersweet end to the Poppy stories. When Poppy's husband Rye passes away, her porcupine friend Ereth tries to comfort her, but she just wants to be left alone. Looking for something new in life, she is nearly killed when a tree branch send her flying, but is rescued by a bat named Luci. Believing her to be dead, Ereth decides to hold a funeral service, while Poppy's grandson Spruce goes looking for her.

While it doesn't quite live up to the feeling, timelessness and characterization of some of the earlier books, Poppy and Ereth will be greatly enjoyed by fans and provides a satisfying and heartwarming ending to one of the best children's books series of all time. Highly recommended.

I bought the Dimwood Forest series for my daughter and she loves them. I first started reading Avi's books nearly 20 years ago and I am glad that my children enjoy his books as well. His books are very easy to pick up and very hard to put down. He is a great author for all ages.

My 9 year old son and I read these books together. What a WONDERFUL story. We didn't want them to end. His teacher started him on the first book and then we were hooked.

Hi Amazon,
You can't imagine how much my Grade 3 children ( 8/ 9 year olds) just adore the 4th book by Avi, Poppy and Ereth. This book was so exciting and scary and both boys and girls were so anxious as I read these last chapters as they thought that Ereth was going to die. The author's development of Ereth's character has been so exciting. As a teacher I do a lot of language work based around these fantastic books. I have bought a soft toy, porcupine and the children love taking their turns to hold Ereth as I read the book. We will start book 5 next term as we are about to go on school holidays. I would love to contact the author Avi, but am not sure how to??
Regards,
Catherine Australia/Tasmania

My 7-year-old daughter has entered a phase right now where she is plowing through books. Obviously, I am thrilled, but the trips to the bookstore will have to give way to trips to the library. Yesterday, at a brick and mortar store she had to choose a series to continue and she chose this one, ahead of Judy Moody and Diary of a Wimpy Kid. She had not seen a Poppy book book for a year, but upon finding this book on the shelf it was like visiting New York for a second time. She rattled off the names of the characters, recalling events like they had happened in her own life, eyes wide, excited about the promise of new adventures. Dimwood Forest speaks to her. Well written books, with remarkably full characters.

My daughter loves the Poppy stories written by Avi Floca. Even with her learning disabilities his stories rock her socks!
