Suddenly, Poppy's leash gets mistakenly caught around a hat stand causing a scarf to fall to the ground. The scarf is black and white designed with skulls and crossbones. Poppy picks up the scarf with her mouth. Dad decides to purchase the scarf for Poppy and a new hat for Mom. Suzy ties the skulls and crossbones scarf around Poppy’s neck. Poppy has now become the Pirate dog.
One of my favorite parts of the story is the illustration showing Poppy and Tim comfortably cuddling together looking at pictures in his book about pirates. I also liked seeing Mom, Dad, Tim and Suzy searching through magazines and pamphlets, hoping to find the perfect pirate ship to lift Poppy's spirits.
I feel young readers will enjoy reading this story that’s filled with colorful entertaining illustrations on each page. The story also makes for a good read-aloud book for children and parents. Therefore, I’m giving Poppy the Pirate Dog a rating of five stars.

The story is cute, and will appeal to readers of all kinds, including those who aren’t anywhere close to being able to read it themselves! This is a fun little book that children will want to read over and over again.
