4.0 out of 5 stars Ed scores!
Another masterpiece from Brasilian soul master Ed Motta, nephew of legendary MPB virtuoso Tim Maia. Ed has joined the innovative Trama label in Brasil, housing an impressive stable of Novo MPB artists with equal pedigrees - the children of Wilson Simonal, Elis Regina, and Jair Rodrigues in Wilson Simoninha, Pedro Carmago Mariano, Max de Castro, Jair Oliviera, and Luciana...

3.0 out of 5 stars Something different than you're used to
Ed Mott'a Poptical is a funky soulful Brasilia jazzy record. This is some good music coming from a balding middle-aged Brazilian soul singer.

It does sound like a Steely Dan record in terms of backing music, which is great if that's your thing. Ed posesses a soulful singing good voice, nothing too overpowering but still pleasing on the ears. Portuguese is...

Another masterpiece from Brasilian soul master Ed Motta, nephew of legendary MPB virtuoso Tim Maia. Ed has joined the innovative Trama label in Brasil, housing an impressive stable of Novo MPB artists with equal pedigrees - the children of Wilson Simonal, Elis Regina, and Jair Rodrigues in Wilson Simoninha, Pedro Carmago Mariano, Max de Castro, Jair Oliviera, and Luciana Mello.

In 'Poptical', Motta takes us on a new fantastic pop journey, incorporating a theme of a cinematographic quality of songs. Motta is a true renaissance man, a connoisseur or food, wine, and song. In 'Poptical', Motta takes us on an aural journey, composing pop gems in Portuguese and English.

This CD is an evolution from his last release, 'Dwitza'. It is a little more subdued from his more upbeat soul work of the past, more "retro" in incorporating many various influences that fill Ed's diverse vinyl collection...He focuses a lot in incorporating vintage keyboards in this album. Video extractions (in Portuguese) can be viewed from his label's home site, www.trama.com.br

In summary, while this album doesn't quite hit the listener initially, and leaves for wanting, further listenings carry one on a voyage of discovery. Fans of Motta should check out his brilliant interpretation of 'Garota de Ipanema' with Roberto Menescal & Bossacucanova 'Brasilidade' release, and participation on the tribute to Jobim by legendary Jaques & Paula Morlenbaum + Ryuichi Sakamoto 'Casa' on Sony Classical...

The only drawback is that some of the slower songs drag a little bit. However, overall I would say it's an enjoyable album though. 3.5 stars.

Ed Motta, one of the remanescent of REAL brazillian music did a wonderful job on this. Poptical mix the groove of funk music with soul and good quality pop music. If you like brazillian music, or if you enjoy Ed Motta, got this, you won't regret!
