Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

This introduction to European American classical music (including opera, dance, and Broadway) provides an excellent guide to lesser-known composers (e.g., Lutoslawski) and conductors, especially women and minorities, but is less successful as an overly clever directory to more significant composers. Unfortunately, some up-and-comers of merit are absent (e.g., Leroy Singleton, Anthony Davis), the organization forces use of the index, and complete oeuvres are unavailable. In addition, suggested recording guides would have aided the novice tremendously. Still, the guide merits consideration because of its inclusiveness, and it functions as a handy companion to Kenneth McLeish's The Listener's Guide to Classical Music (Macmillan, 1991) and Bernard H. Haggin's The Listener's Music Companion (Oxford, 1991).
