Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
Trooper's fourth release rings like a breakthrough. If producer Buddy Miller's rolling Americana settings--a muscular approach to acoustic ensembles of mandolin, accordion, guitars, fiddle, and organ--provide a key, Trooper's songwriting, weathered to lean insights of human struggle, provides another. His melodic style is anthemic--simple three-chord grooves that afford space for the imaginative chops of Tammy Rogers, Duane Jarvis, and Miller, who throws down warm, swampy electric guitar. Trooper sounds hungry, his voice full of dark-eyed soul--reminiscent perhaps of Marc Cohn or a less cutting Steve Earle (who duets on a fantastic, bluesy reading of Dylan's "I'll Keep It with Mine," possibly the album's strongest moment). Popular Demons stands beside this year's most tasteful and catchy alternative country. --Roy Francis Kasten

No Depression
On Popular Demons ... Trooper serves notice that he's a full-fledged member of the left-of-center music community in Nashville, twangin' harder than ever before and loading up the guest list for third disc with names such as Emmylou Harris and Steve Earle.

5.0 out of 5 stars songwriting bliss, July 22, 2001
I bought "Popular Demons" because of Buddy Miller's involvement, but found that the singing, performances, and songwriting were all top-notch. This is a CD I listen to frequently.

The performances match the songwriting. Mr. Trooper does not overreach. His singing is understated and he lets the song melodies tell the stories as much as the lyrics do. Frequently reminds me of Slaid Cleaves.

"Bluebell", "22 Miles to Bristol" and "Paradise" work especially well for me. I purchase his most recent--"Straight Down Rain"--and to me the songwriting, singing and overall performances are not as strong. Makes me treasure "Popular Demons" all the more.

5.0 out of 5 stars My favorite album., July 19, 1999
By A Customer
I picked up this album on a lark in a used cd bin in a local music store. It is the album that I play the most currently. I consider myself to be far more alternative than country, but I have carted this cd around so much that track 7 is scratched and won't play right any more. This album is so much more rich and interesting than most contemporary country-definitely not your run-of-the_mill country. These songs, especially tracks 1,3-5, and 12 move me greatly and make me want to dance. Buy this album.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Wonderful!, August 31, 1999
WHY does this artist remain relatively "unknown" (?) except by old friends and followers who have to scavenge on line in the hope that there is something new from this wonderful voice and song-writing talent. Guess it's like truffles--you have to dig for the true delicacies.
