This is not what the book look likes,
This review is from: Popular Paranoia: The Best of Steamshovel Press (Paperback)
Somehow the image of a working prototype for the cover of this book appears on this page. It is a slightly altered version of another book, Popular Alienation, which anthologized the earliest issues of Steamshovel Press. The new book, Popular Paranoia, anthologizes the most recent issues and includes a great cover by artist Kevin Belford. The actual cover can be found at the Steamshovel Press website (steamshovelpress.com).

I'm a big fan of this sort of thing and am always looking for something that will add in information or insight into the genre. This seemed a good bet in that the user reviews and reputation of Steamshovel Press pretty much said 'go for it.'My Christmas wishes were met when this showed up under the tree. I wasted little time in getting down to it.
Well............it's a mixed bag. I did like many of the articles. I learned about people who were only shadows to me previously, and I found greater insights into conspiracies and people I was well familiar with. The book itself, however, was quite a mess. This was easily the most poorly edited book I've ever come across. It was so bad I needed to ask myself if there was an editor involved at all. Words running together, entire sentences and even paragraphs repeated and, of course, lots of mis-spelled words. To top that off the book's layout seemed random at best. Letters to the editor were sprinkled here, there and everywhere, as were the book reviews. There is no crime in this I suppose but it seemed to throw off the rhythm of things. There were also times when I wasn't certain if I'd finished an article or not because of the way the various sections or articles were headed. I just wasn't always certain if I was finished with an article or just moving into another part of it. And the photographs. They were so poorly reproduced as to be worthless. They also lacked captioning so I wasn't sure what they pertained to. That being said, much of this is a good read. I found most of the articles, reviews and interviews quite interesting. One notable exception was an interview with a guy who writes about "The 300" which is supposed to be about the 300 guys who really rule the world. It just didn't ring true. He spoke in terms that were so broad and vague that I simply did not believe it. This isn't bad but had the publisher hired a competent editor it could have been much better. The devil is in the details and he's nipping at their heels.

This book is really a compilation of back issues of Steamshovel Press. This book is definately not for the paranoia newbie. Hardcore, flying all over this place, this book touches on most currents in modern paranoia writing. Nazis, UFOs, AIDS, JFK, and topics even more obscure are in there. However, there are two downsides. One, as its an anthology, there are many authors represented. As a result, the articles range from rabid, foaming fearmongering to literate, well thought out analysis. Your milage will vary on each article & topic. Also, the book (maybe representative of the magazine) is full of typos. For example, on several pages, the last paragraph on one page is repeated on the next page. Very disruptive to your reading. Mis-spellings abound (not that I'm any better with spelling, but I'm also not an editor). The book is large, with a *very* nice cover (different from the one pictured here), and decent print quality. A good buy if you are serious about your paranoia.
