More About the Author

Kenn Thomas works as a conspiracy writer, a parapolitical researcher, university library archivist, and showrunner for Steamshovel Press, a parapolitical conspiracy cyber presence and magazine. He has written books on the Inslaw affair, co-authoring The Octopus with the late Jim Keith, and on Fred Crisman and the Maury Island Incident.

Thomas has authored over a dozen books on various conspiracy topics. The latest is JFK & UFO, about the possibility that 1947 UFO witness Fred Crisman was connected to the assassination of John F. Kennedy; and The Octopus: Secret Government and the Death of Danny Casolaro, about theInslaw affair. In 2004, Feral House published a new edition of The Octopus, extending the suggestion of connections to the post-9/11 world and al-Qaeda. Feral House also recently published the new book, fully titled JFK & UFO: Military-Industrial Conspiracy and Cover-Up from Maury Island to Dallas.[1]

Thomas calls his research interest "parapolitics," the study of conspiracies of all colors -- from alien abductions and the Illuminati, to the John F. Kennedy assassination and the September 11, 2001 attacks. The New Yorker called his work "on the cutting edge" of conspiracy. His name has become a proverb for a conspiracy theorist; enough so that a baseball almanac described the sport as involving "enough fishy behavior to keep Kenn Thomas swarming for years."[2]

Thomas lectures extensively. He has appeared at Conspiracy Con in San Francisco many years; the Disinfo Con and Media Monotone conferences in New York,; the Crash Retrieval Conference in Las Vegas; the International UFO Conference in Laughlin; the FortFest and Beyond Knowledge conferences in London; even on a Caribbean cruise ship. Most recently he appeared at the Alternative Research Community conference in Bath, England and the All I Want Is The Truth conference in Atlanta, Georgia.

In addition to JFK & UFO, Thomas' writing currently also appears The Casebook on the Men In Black (published by AUP) and Round Trip To Hell In A Flying Saucer (published by Global Communications). His web site, steamshovelpress.com, also makes available a new PDF book entitled Popular Parapolitics and a DVD of his appearance with psychedelic philosopher Timothy Leary, called Cafe Chaos.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is not what the book look likes, December 23, 2002

Somehow the image of a working prototype for the cover of this book appears on this page. It is a slightly altered version of another book, Popular Alienation, which anthologized the earliest issues of Steamshovel Press. The new book, Popular Paranoia, anthologizes the most recent issues and includes a great cover by artist Kevin Belford. The actual cover can be found at the Steamshovel Press website (steamshovelpress.com).

3.0 out of 5 stars The Devil is in the Details, March 18, 2010

I'm a big fan of this sort of thing and am always looking for something that will add in information or insight into the genre. This seemed a good bet in that the user reviews and reputation of Steamshovel Press pretty much said 'go for it.'My Christmas wishes were met when this showed up under the tree. I wasted little time in getting down to it.

Well............it's a mixed bag. I did like many of the articles. I learned about people who were only shadows to me previously, and I found greater insights into conspiracies and people I was well familiar with. The book itself, however, was quite a mess. This was easily the most poorly edited book I've ever come across. It was so bad I needed to ask myself if there was an editor involved at all. Words running together, entire sentences and even paragraphs repeated and, of course, lots of mis-spelled words. To top that off the book's layout seemed random at best. Letters to the editor were sprinkled here, there and everywhere, as were the book reviews. There is no crime in this I suppose but it seemed to throw off the rhythm of things. There were also times when I wasn't certain if I'd finished an article or not because of the way the various sections or articles were headed. I just wasn't always certain if I was finished with an article or just moving into another part of it. And the photographs. They were so poorly reproduced as to be worthless. They also lacked captioning so I wasn't sure what they pertained to.

That being said, much of this is a good read. I found most of the articles, reviews and interviews quite interesting. One notable exception was an interview with a guy who writes about "The 300" which is supposed to be about the 300 guys who really rule the world. It just didn't ring true. He spoke in terms that were so broad and vague that I simply did not believe it.

This isn't bad but had the publisher hired a competent editor it could have been much better. The devil is in the details and he's nipping at their heels.

This review is from: Popular Paranoia: The Best of Steamshovel Press (Paperback)
This book is really a compilation of back issues of Steamshovel Press. This book is definately not for the paranoia newbie. Hardcore, flying all over this place, this book touches on most currents in modern paranoia writing. Nazis, UFOs, AIDS, JFK, and topics even more obscure are in there.

However, there are two downsides. One, as its an anthology, there are many authors represented. As a result, the articles range from rabid, foaming fearmongering to literate, well thought out analysis. Your milage will vary on each article & topic.

Also, the book (maybe representative of the magazine) is full of typos. For example, on several pages, the last paragraph on one page is repeated on the next page. Very disruptive to your reading. Mis-spellings abound (not that I'm any better with spelling, but I'm also not an editor).

The book is large, with a *very* nice cover (different from the one pictured here), and decent print quality. A good buy if you are serious about your paranoia.
