Book Description

British Academy Postdoctoral Fellowship Monographs August 26, 2004
Dr Butler provides a new interpretation of the cristero war (1926-29) which divided Mexico's peasantry into rival camps loyal to the Catholic Church (cristero) or the Revolution (agrarista). Focusing on the state of Michoacn in western-central Mexico, the book shows how matters of faith were as crucial to peasants on both sides as political factors. Based on oral testimonies and evidence from many ecclesiastical and state archives, this study makes an important contribution to the religious history of the Mexican Revolution.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"...a fine-tuned account of local variations in how people organized and lived their daily lives, especially with regard to religion. Butler's careful and considered analysis of religious practice and parish organization in relation to political partisanship makes for an unusually substantive cultural argument." -- Latin American Research Review

"This painstakingly researched volume by Matthew Butler provides unparalleled insights into the origins and course of the 1926-1929 Catholic-inspired uprising known at the Cristero revolt."--American Historical Review

"Butler utilizes the important literature of the Cristero Rebellion together with impressive primary research to craft a well-written, incisive, and important contribution on how local history can mirror the diversity of responses found on the national stage. Recommended."--CHOICE
