This Book Gets My Vote!, September 15, 2008
This review is from: Popular Vote (Paperback)
Erin is a high school student, the daughter of the town mayor, and the girlfriend of the student council president. A hopeful writer, she keeps a private handwritten journal as well as a personal blog. After learning about some environmental issues facing her school and her town, she can't stay silent, and, before she knows it, her new passionate stance leads to her running against her boyfriend in the school election. It takes a lot of guts for her to speak up and sound off about a company related to her father's campaign, but she does it. Hopefully, Erin's willingness to take a stand and fight for what she thinks is right will inspire readers to do the same. This book is a fun read. Anyone who has ever run for a student council position will appreciate Erin's campaign. Middle school and high school students know all about the politics of popularity. Popular Vote also brings up other issues: the pressures of being the child of a politician, taking action in your school and community, and taking a stand. Erin certainly gets my vote, as does author Micol Ostow.

My Book Review, February 24, 2011
This review is from: Popular Vote (Paperback)
The book Popular Vote by Micol Ostow is about a girl that has always been and always will be "perfect". Erin Bright is the astonishing First Daughter of Plainsboro and the loyal First Girlfriend of Plainsboro High. You could almost call her an accessory to a good campaign, but what will happen when the "accessory" forms opinions that go against the opinions of the political men in her life? I love this book. Erin Bright is faultless. She has always been a small town celebrity in Plainsboro. Since her dad's big second term election is coming up, she is participating in photo shoots, continuously watching Channel Three News, and monitoring her own pages on Facebook and MySpace. That's not the only election that is coming up though. Her boyfriend Logan is running for Student Council President, and he is stressed even though no one is running against him and he has been the president for two years. Both elections are running smoothly until Erin hears that the School Board is thinking about selling Everett Field. Everett Field is the field where Erin's favorite author, Edwina St. Claire, wrote stories and where she and Logan have a lot of memories. Erin is passionate about saving the field, and accidently voices her opinion at Logan's debate. Logan is mad, and after dating for two years they break up. Erin's fury causes her to begin running in the election against Logan. While she and her new running mate Theo (Logan's ex-running mate) are researching about Everett field, she learns that the Caswell Corporation (the company that sponsors her dad's campaign) is going to buy the field and turn it into a gas station. Erin decides to continue fighting for what she believes in. Her dad wins the election for mayor. Erin wins her election and learns that Logan sent a petition around to save Everett Field. This book is similar to Whatever Happened to Janie. When Janie moved back with her real family, she felt alone like Erin. They probably didn't feel exactly the same, but they both felt alone even though they had people around them that loved them. I think Whatever Happened to Janie was sadder, but they still tell the stories of teenage girls. Janie like Erin wants to see the boy she loves, but she can't. Even though it is for a different reason, they both can't see their boyfriends. Reeve is like Logan in the way that he loves his girlfriend and would do almost anything to see her. Reeve drove to see Janie, and Logan got a petition signed in order to make Erin happy. I guess you could call Erin the protagonist in the story. She was arguing with someone special in her life throughout almost the whole story. Erin wasn't meaning to try to fight with everyone, but everyone had always thought that she didn't have an opinion, and she was ready to be heard. I think Erin is also arguing with herself in this story. She gets sort of depressed in the middle of the story. She feels like the whole world is against her. I think what was hurting her most is that she had never felt that way before. She had never felt so strong about something and been all alone before. She had always shared someone else's ideas. I really enjoyed this book. It has romance and politics. I really liked Erin and Logan's relationship. They were both so in love, but they let politics get in the way. In the end, they realize that they really are each other's "accessory". I didn't really like the parts with Theo in them. He was a creepy liar. This book is unique in a way that just when you think everything is going downhill for Erin, everything gets better. I really don't think the author could have done anything to make this book better. I loved it. I would definitely recommend this book to others. It is a great story of a girl who stands against everyone she loves to save something she cares about.

Erin Bright has always been the good girl. She stays in line and behaves herself. Her father is the mayor of their town, so she has to always be proper as the First Daughter of Plainsboro. And her boyfriend, Logan, is Student Council president. She's a major force behind Logan's campaign, even though Logan is running unopposed, again. Erin has never wanted the spotlight for herself. At least until now, she's never wanted to follow in her father's footsteps. But when she learns the news that developers want to plow up historic Everett Field, Erin has had enough. It would have been fine if Logan would have agreed to try to petition the school board to prohibit the sale of the historic field, but he says there's nothing the student body can do. Erin finds herself an unlikely candidate for student council president. By putting herself on the ballot, Erin may lose her boyfriend, her best friends, and her father's re-election bid, all in one swoop. Find out what Erin does to try to save her precious Everett Field and become the girl she didn't know she could be. POPULAR VOTE is a great story about a strong girl who fights for what she believes is right. Erin sticks to her principles and battles for a cause she truly believes in, even in the face of much adversity. Reviewed by: Jaglvr
