Never Ending Fiesta,
By
This review is from: Un Poquito Quema'o (Audio CD)
This CD is non-stop party music, it starts out with a fine salsa beat that morfs into something undefineable. The end result is a blend of styles that hit on many different types of music including reggae, rag-a-muffin, merengue, electronica and of course salsa. Heavy on percussion, polyrhythmns and horns the mix defies description which makes it all the more intertesting. Really who needs to define something when you're partying to a beat that is non-stop good times. The fact that these guys are from France is undetectable as the rhythmns are Caribbean and the language is Spanish(some French). No doubt about it though, these guys rock in any language. The leader is "El Sargento Garcia" but "Los Locos Del Barrio" are all fine musicians especially the piano player,Pedrito Lucas de la vega, as well as the invited guests who scratch and sing for additional effect. The themes explored are diverse and touch upon everything from love to revolution. Excellent party music for your fiesta you will get much play out of this CD as it is one you will play over and over. The fiesta never ends when these guys are singing and playing their versions of their originals. Guaranteed to make you move and dance this CD is the epitome of the new direction the Caribbean winds are blowing, to Europe for new interpretations for the world to enjoy.

I first heard Sergent Garcia as a guest vocalist on Peret's album "Rey de la Rumba." Garcia and his band are an incredible talent that needs to be discovered in the States. The beauty and rhythm of the Spanish and French language are omnipresent on this disc. The fusion of Cuban son, reggae, rap/hip hop, and salsa blend tremendously well. If you make it past the first four songs, which had me repeating them over and over, the albums entirety will not disappoint. As a lyricist and musician, there is truly no other like el sergento. He is a talent that only comes around once in a generation."no te pierdas, no te pierdas, por las pierdas del camino no te pierdas!" Buy this CD.

So you're a fan of Latin music? Not until you have this CD! I happened to catch this hot Cuban-inspired band from Paris (yes, Paris) in New Orleans at the House of Blues' new club, The Parish and all I can say is WOW! Being a big fan of Latin music and dance, I was all set for a cheesy, jump on the bandwagon type of band that would barely keep me entertained. I was in for a very pleasent surprise! Sergent Garcia blends so many sounds of the Caribbean that they produce a sound of their own. A little reggae, salsa, son, ska...and the list goes on! I agree, you can't listen to this music and not dance! They blew up the stage in Louisianna and I look forward to their continued success. I rushed home (seriously) straight to Amazon.com and searched for their CD. The performance was great, the energy was pumping and the band themselves had a good time. They even invited the ladies on-stage to dance a rumba with the 3 lead (and oh so handsome) members. Make this a part of your collection, you won't be sorry!

La cumbre,

This album is unbelievable. I love music sung in Spanish but this blows away everything else. I am a fan of two of the bands mentioned, Los Fabulosos Cadilacs and Ozomatli but they can't compare to album Sergent Garcia has put together. I was immediately impressed by how good the musicians were. This is album is not cheesy or <cursi> like many latin american albums are. The first thing I noticed was the excellent piano work. Yet every instrument works together perfectly. This album is tight. Whats more I love the vocalists as well. La Capitana (track 4) has an intriguing voice. Sergent Garcia has a good voice as well and I was very impressed with his lyrical ability. For a non-native speaker to sing so quickly is very impressive. I would recomend especially tracks 2,4,5,and 8. Check this album out. If you like Latin music at all you will love this album.

Awesome! We heard this CD in a Cuban bar in Brest, France and had to know who it was; we ran down the street and bought a copy on the spot. This group is very hard to find in U.S. shops, but they're touring here. I met them on tour in Houston (with Los Van Van, who couldn't compare to the fun these guys were dishing out), and they were still amazed that Americans knew of them. I also have their first CD titled "Viva en Sargento", and it is equally high-energy. I'd love to see that one available here as well. I'd also like to know if anyone has a web site where their tours are listed.

If you're a fan of latin or caribbean beat, you will have your choice of things to like about this album. (I found it by accident in Paris this spring.) The voices are as energetic as the instrumental portions and there's lots of variations of style, sometimes reminding you of Brazilian as well. It's good to play late at night, working at your desk OR blast it at your next outdoor party. Not familiar with the group, but I will definitely look for the next recording.
