Poetry in Havana,
This review is from: Por La Habana (Audio CD)
Ah, what a beautiful collection of music and lyrics this is, a really remarkable cd where poetry rules.
Although the concept is not new, since many albums have been recorded with New York or Paris or Rome as centerpiece, the selection of songs devoted to La Habana is exquisite in their rhythms and meanings. Don't doubt it, the tracks are discreet masterpieces. Songs like Julio Gutierrez's "En La Habana", the hypnotic "Noche en el Mar" and Marta Valdes's architectural song, "Por La Habana", are treasures to be cherished. "El cantaro azul", with lyrics by poet Dulce Maria Loynaz, is so full of mystery and beauty and magic. Even "Esto no es una elegia", by Silvio Rodriguez (whose songs I don't generally like and whom I don't respect much as a human being), sounds exquisite in Ms. Ramos' velvety voice. Most of all, these songs are part of who Ms. Ramos is. This selection from the best of Cuban music will hook you up and haunt you. Sit, close your eyes and let Ms. Ramos lead you to a world of delights. What are you waiting for? Go buy it. |
