5 and upK and upI Can Read Book 2

Porcupine invites Otter and Owl to sleep over. Otter takes care of the snacks. Owl decides what to watch on TV. But who will be in charge of fighting off monsters in the closet, at the window, and under the bed?

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

The prospect of a sleepover can be both exciting and scary for the younger elementary school child. This exuberant I Can Read captures both reactions in four low-key and satisfyingly funny stories. Porcupine invites his two best friends to spend the night. Owl wants to try out a new cookie recipe, but the three buddies eat the batter up before they get into the oven. Otter wants to watch "Monster Bat" on TV, and they all end up scared silly. In the last story, they squabble over places in the double bed and each confronts his own personal "monster." Cushman's humorous line drawings, washed in color, are well matched to the text. Newcomers to the I Can Read line as well as fans of Arnold Lobel's Frog and Toad will warm to these three amigos. Ages 4-8.

From School Library Journal

Kindergarten-Grade 3 Porcupine invites Owl and Otter to a pajama party. The three friends make cookies, then settle down with popcorn to watch the ``Monster Bat'' movie. When it gets too scary, Porcupine and Otter retreat to the bathroom (to read), leaving Owl alone. He becomes frightened and joins them in the bathroom. In bed they imagine that monsters are after them, but their fears are dispelled. A blanket, fireflies, and a mouse eating crumbs are not very frightening once you know what they are. Cushman's gently washed illustrations are just right for the comfortable easy-reading text. Let's hope that there are many more stories about these three appealing friends. 5.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable book for dad's bedtime story, September 27, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Porcupine's Pajama Party (I Can Read Book 2) (Paperback)
My daughter and I found this book to be enjoyable. Not only is it fun to read (and quick) for dads, but a good book for new readers. The stories cover essential topics and how the three friends in the story handle them together. Easy for children to learn from and apply to their situations, such as what those noises in the night really are.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Scary, but Fun Pajama Party, May 4, 2005
This review is from: Porcupine's Pajama Party (I Can Read Book 2) (Paperback)
Porcupine is eating peanut butter and celery sticks for lunch when he gets an idea. Why not have a pajama party, so he invites Otter and Owl. Owl says he wants to watch a scary movie on TV, Otter wants to make cookies. No problem Porcupine says, we can do it all at my place. The cookies are good, but the movie is really scary and our trio imagines all kinds of things during the night, until they finally drift off to sleep.

My almost three-year-old son Devon really like this book. We've been reading these kind of early reading books for a year now, with me making up words to the stories, words I thought he could understand. But now that he knows all his letters (both upper and lower case), I'm reading the actual words with my fingers under them as we move along. If you want your toddler to read before Kindergarten, and I do, then this is the kind of book you want in your house. It's a nice story, an excellent addition to your reading arsenal.

This was my favorite book as a kid. Even my dad loved it and we used to read it together all the time. I was so stoked when I saw it here and I knew I had to buy myself a copy! I highly recommend it if you have kids or even if you don't!
