Pork & Beans - part of a balanced Weezer meal,
By
This review is from: Pork And Beans (MP3 Download)
Simple and pure in true Weezer form, although one wonders if Rivers is getting some kind of royalties for mentioning Oakley and Rogaine. The song does lack a solo, but hopefully this isn't standard on Album 6 and doesn't follow any type of formula found on the Green Album. Lyrically, nothing as revealing as found on Pinkerton, but perhaps rediscovered confidence that one does find with marital bliss. I do enjoy Rivers poking fun of and talking about concocting the "perfect pop song" with Timbaland. I just wish this thing was Pepsi Point eligible. Hopefully this is just a taste of what we'll expect on Album 6.

This is one of Weezer's best efforts since Pinkerton. Loud, raucous, but just right in rhythm and time. Very radio-friendly will encourage folks to re-discover this terrific band they may have lost track of along the way.

This really does seem like the sound that so many people have been waiting for from Weezer since the Weezer and Pinkerton. While many other bands wither away into obscurity it seems that Weezer has a different plan for their fate.I wouldn't be surprised if Pork and Beans ended up high on the charts and being played everywhere before the the albums full release. This song also has a very Lennon/McCartney feel to it. It will be interesting to hear the rest of the album in its entirety. They were offering the whole album as a download yesterday and I hesitated ... damn! I've posted the lyrics below for those wanting to know ...

Unbelievably Catchy Song with a Great Hook and Memorable Chorus: Classic Weezer.,
This review is from: Pork And Beans (MP3 Download)
Pork & Beans - One of the last songs to be recorded for the album and also the most recent single. The song was written in response to Geffen's (Weezer's label) request for a more commercial song. "Everyone likes to dance to a happy song/ With a catchy chorus and beat so they can sing along/ Timbaland knows the way to reach the top of the chart..." Lyrics like that cannot make it more obvious. Cuomo lashes out at the labels demands in his own way and in the process, creates an unbelievably catchy song with a great hook and memorable chorus: classic Weezer. A definite highlight. 4.5/5

Good Song, Totally Awesome Music Video,
By
This review is from: Pork And Beans (MP3 Download)
Weezer never seems to go away. Just when you think they're done with music, they come back with something better than their last. And this time, they might have just topped themselves. When I first heard the song, I didn't care that much for it. It all just seemed too weird, and culinary disgusting, "I eat my candy with the pork and beans." But then I saw the music video, which is a freakin' awesome tribute to YouTube and pop culture, complete with comedy, and cool effects, and everybody appears as themselves in the video. You'll see "Numa Numa" guy, and 'Miss I Don't Know Why People Don't Have Maps.'Lyrically, the song and the video go hand in hand, where it celebrates the difference of everybody, which is what YouTube is supposed to be all about. Musically, it's pretty good modern rock material, and apparently so. There's the booming guitars, the vocals, and the catchy hooks. And again, if you haven't seen the video, do yourself a favor, and do so. It's must-see TV. And it really compliments and drives the song, instead of the other way around. Favorite Part: The Mentos in Coke Fountain Show. The only thing that they could have done better in the video is add Lonleygirl15 to the beginning squares, instead of "Numa Numa" guy, and save him for his great part later. Overall, the song is good, not great. Pretty good modern rock, although it doesn't blow me aways by itself. But add the video, and everything changes. And the video is already headed toward the YouTube hall of fame on its own. And the song may end up as one of the most successful of 2008, at least in Modern Rock. Real Score: 4.5 [...]

MIX OF OLD AND NEW,

I've been waiting so long for a new Weezer album! Make believe was my favorite album from them in years (other than Pinkerton). Speaking of Pinkerton, this sounds A LOT like a mixture of that album along with the piano rockish chords of Make Beleive. Man oh man, what a great song. I love how Rivers makes fun of how hard it is to "make a catchy pop tune".

This song, in my opinion, is SO AWESOME. I've been patiently waiting for Weezer to rock out (Blue Album and Pinkerton style) and this song makes my dream come true. The guitars crunch, the gang vocals are awesome, there's hand-clapping, all classic Weezer stuff. It's truly awesome. My one and ONLY negative, is that the song isn't long enough, but that's why my Zune's repeat setting is for ;) Get this song!

This is a great song! It's got elements of the old Weezer sound with a modern twist. Love the heavy guitar sound. Easily the best Weezer single since Hash Pipe. I hope this is the direction they are taking on the new album. If you haven't heard Weezer in awhile, check this tune out!

This is just as dull and pointless as the past three albums. I don't usually write "hater" reviews... but there's nothing good anymore. They're suppose to be such quality musicians... where's the musicianship? There is nothing, bad, about the music, but the solos always follow the vocal melody exactly, there is just constant guitar distortion that goes no where, and the lyrics are pointless. "Timbaland knows the way to reach the top of the chart... maybe if I work with him I could perfect the art"... yea Rivers, I don't know if that's satirical... but it's true1996, last good album, I can't see myself buying another weezer album after the Green Album... that's another thing, they gotta stop with the self titled albums... we get it. |
