Format: Paperback
This is the third in this ongoing series from the same publisher that I've purchased, and like the others, one on the Japanese girl gang films of the '70s, and another on Jean Rollin's French vampire films (there's also one on De Sade out there), it has the same flaws and the same virtues. While the page count is thicker, the title is meaningless and silly, as usual, the design superb as before (the sukeban and Rollin books are a treat for the eye). Light on text, but heavy on photographs and illustrations (posters, etc.), it is a worthy addition to the library of someone who's already a fan, and a visual primer for anyone in the process of discovering these films (a visual medium, after all). I recommend this book to all parties, despite its failings (now let's have one on Tinto Brass).

After a brief but informed overview of Franco's career, the bulk of the book consists of hundreds of photos from Franco's approx. 200 films. It would have been nice, if not sensible, for the art to be identified, and particularly the players portrayed in them, knowledge which the detail in the introduction suggests the editor/author should be able to provide. He's savvy enough to put Lina Romay on the front cover, Soledad MIranda on the back, and Alice Arno and Janine Reynaud at front and back interior. Lina, as I'm sure you'll want to know, is well represented. Fans will also spot the legendary Howard Vernon and Franco himself. There is, thankfully, a photo index at the back, and a film index. The book's text, after the intro, consists entirely of a chronological listing of the films, but without actor credits or even a brief one line synopsis. This is lazy, and a major disappointment for clarity.

More of a photographic overview then expected. Hoping for a little more coverage of the filming and genesis of the films. The book is full of images I hadn't seen before, but very light textually. Still, highly recommended.
