Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 7-12 The difficult, controversial, and confusing subject of pornography is impartially presented to teenagers in this well-documented, carefully-written book. Gorman emphasizes that pornography is a moral and political issue, not a scientific one. From this premise she begins reviewing the history of pornography, problems with definitions, and a comparison of the subject with obscenity and erotica. She follows the legal precedent set by court cases and decisions from federally appointed commissions, then compares them to religious and moral issues from anti-smut and feminists groups, giving readers a variety of opinions on the issue. The debate primarily concerns the rights of the people as opposed to questions about sexuality and morality. In presenting arguments on both sides, Gorman successfully follows each side's opinion with an opposing view. A concise look at issues surrounding child pornography is also discussed without sensationalizing or underplaying the importance of the subject. Chapters include legalization, censorship, religion, violence, child porn, big business, and the Meese Commission. A much-needed resource. Judie Porter, Media Services Center, Portsmouth School Department, R.I.
