Book Description

July 7, 2008
Dolphins radiate with a freedom and simplicity that most humans long for. In his new book, The Porpoise-Given Life: Inspiration from the Cetacean Nation, pastor and punster Chris Hughes explores life through a dolphin's eyes.

Weaving biblical truth and ecological insight, Hughes offers thoughtful perspectives on challenging global issues such as climate change, poverty and hunger, and clean water. Hughes' engaging postmodern counterpoint to The Purpose-Driven Life invites followers of Jesus to embrace living with passionate purpose and joy, and provides countless fresh and fun ideas for joining in God's ongoing work of bringing good news to the creation.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Chris Hughes playfully fuses his love of dolphins and the teaching of the Bible in this helpful book. By exploring the wisdom of the dolphins and how they live and thrive in the oceans, he invites us to consider how they might model for us a better way of living, a way more closely aligned with the Scriptures. I highly recommend this book for all who seek to live wisely and joyfully. --Scott Taylor, Founder and Executive Director of the Cetacean Studies Institute and author of Souls in the Sea

Too many followers of Jesus look like they've been born in crab-apple season. Chris Hughes has produced a firecracker of a book to throw into every crowd of cranky, contentious, humorless Christians. Read The Porpoise-Given Life, and many times your mouth will fill up with one of the best sounds in the world: laughter. Am I the only one out there who wants to die laughing? --Leonard Sweet, E. Stanley Jones Professor of Evangelism, Drew Theological School, Visiting Distinguished Professor, George Fox University

Chris Hughes tosses science and spirituality into a blender and pours out a cosmic cocktail guaranteed to make you smile. --Rev. Howard Hanger, Pastor, The Jubilee Community, Asheville, North Carolina

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Book for Small Group ministry!, November 29, 2008
This review is from: The Porpoise-Given Life: Inspiration from the Cetacean Nation (Perfect Paperback)
This is just an incredible book and much needed in today's pop-theology culture where high sales totals define doctrine rather than solid historical and reasoned faith.

I enjoyed this book very much as I read it! I think it would be a great book for small group ministry. Easy to read chapters make it accessible while the ideas contained in each chapter would allow a small group to go as deep as the conversation allows.

I plan to use this book with groups of older Youth and in my Young Adult Sunday school class.

Leonard Sweet says it best on the jacket cover recommendation: "Too many followers of Jesus look like they've been born in crab-apple season. Chris Hughes has produced a firecracker of a book to throw into every crowd of cranky, contentious, humorless Christians...."

I find each of the 9 chapters well laid-out and in a logical progression. At the end of each chapter is a page with quotes, questions, actions, wisdom, and prayer that would help a group facilitator or just allow an individual to go deeper.

What a wonderful playful metaphor Chris has given us to think about God and life! You'll be blessed by this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sweet debut, August 21, 2008
This review is from: The Porpoise-Given Life: Inspiration from the Cetacean Nation (Perfect Paperback)
Chris Hughes quickly joins the best thinkers and teachers of the culture with this beautifully crafted book. It's smart, avoids cliches and pushes the envelope. I have bought extras and shared them with my friends -- first time I've done that. A great tool for the personal journey as well as a jumping off point for discussion and exploration.

5.0 out of 5 stars refreshing, August 19, 2008
This review is from: The Porpoise-Given Life: Inspiration from the Cetacean Nation (Perfect Paperback)
This book is a breath of fresh air. This book bridges the gap that has been created between the spiritual and the physical and helps us realize that they are one in the same. In order to have a flourshing spiritual life, we must first be provided, or more importantly, provide others with the basic needs to sustain a physical life. Hughes reminds us that stewardship, service, and justice-seeking become not only ideals but physical manifestations of a worshipful life.
