From Library Journal
Grade 6 Up-An introduction to the physical characteristics, distribution, evolution, behavior, and social structure of the porpoise. Relaying his personal experiences as well as those of his colleagues, the author presents detailed, current information on the six species of true porpoise. He also compares and contrasts this creature to its relative, the dolphin. The animal's adaptations to life at sea and how this vast, remote environment hinders scientific study are addressed as well. Since fishing practices and pollution have brought some species close to extinction, the discussion of current conservation efforts adds to the book's relevancy. While the text is best suited to middle school and up, the superb color photographs will make it popular with young nature enthusiasts. Because many books combine porpoises with dolphins, and sometimes whales, Read's single volume treatment of these graceful creatures will be a welcome addition to any collection.
