5.0 out of 5 stars An expert documents Porsche's best 356 models, January 4, 2012

This review is from: Porsche 356 Carrera: Four Cam Production Car (Hardcover)
Full disclosure - I know Cole Scrogham a long time and my photographs are on the cover and in several places inside the book. But I have been a Porsche 356 guy since 1975 when I bought my first Porsche (356 C Coupe) and my love for these cars hasn't diminished a bit since. While the 356 lineage is filled with exciting cars, none are more interesting than the Carreras. These were cars that helped Porsche earn the title "giant killer". These cars had small, yet powerful motors that were both reliable (Stirling Moss called them "unburstable") and fuel efficient. Add in period-best handling and carefully engineered light weight and these cars became the gold standard for fun, fast and entertaining sports racers. Back then, you could drive to your local SCCA event, pull off the bumpers, pump up the tire pressures and go racing. With typical Porsche reliability, chances are that you would come home with a trophy and an car capable of getting you to work on Monday. That's right - these were production cars capable of both winning races AND being your reliable daily driver.

Cole Scrogham earned his expertise the old fashion way - he has spent his life working on, restoring, rebuilding and loving Porsches. He learned his skills at a world famous restoration shop in Virginia owned by his dad, Weldon and he has learned very well. On my visit to photograph the cover, I saw a shop full of cars in various stages of restoration (including a 356 for famous comedian and huge Porsche fan, Jerry Seinfeld). You learn what makes a car tick when you disassemble it and have to recreate it to prize winning car show standards. Cole and his family do that better than almost anyone - and the evidence is in the trophy case!

If you love Porsche 356's, then you most certainly know about Carreras. But if you want to know more about the production cars - for example, you are a PCA concours judge or judge at a high end concours like Pebble Beach or Amelia Island - you really need this book in your car library. It's a well documented compendium of valuable information.

Highly recommended to all of you Porsche guys and gals out there.
