A Coffee Table book, nothing more.,
By A Customer
This review is from: Porsche 911: Engine History & Development (Hardcover)
This book is lousy. Written by a non-technical marketing type, it contains a lot of pretty-pretty pictures and minimal micky-mouse text. Its not helped by the deadening effect of a leaden translation - the original was written in German. There are vast errors of ommision, there's not a single critical phrase, and its not comprehensive; for example the 2.4 fuel injected 'T's of 1973 aren't even mentioned. A total waste of money - if you actually want to know something about 911 engines, buy Paul Fere's excellent '911 Story.'

There is nothing new here for the real enthusiast. It also fails as a coffee table book for the casual Porsche fan. The title and the author make this a very misleading book.

Reviewed as a Coffee Table Book...,
By Wayne R. Dempsey (Los Angeles, CA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Porsche 911: Engine History & Development (Hardcover)
This is like one of those pretty-picture coffee table books that you see with all the models of Porsches in them, except this one focuses on the 911 engine. It's not a bad book - I enjoyed it - if you know what you are expecting. Don't expect it to tell you how to tear down and rebuild your engine (check out my upcoming book for that), but keep in mind that this is a photo book with a literal history of the development of the motor. It's a unique twist on the sometimes mundane cookie-cutter picture book. The text is a little dry at times, but not too difficult to read.
