Editorial Reviews

From the Back Cover

By any measure, Porsche’s 911 is one of the greatest sports cars of all time. A commercial sales success since its introduction, the 911 is arguably the most successful competition car ever built, with victories at the Monte Carlo Rally, Targa Florio, 24 Hours of Le Mans, 24 Hours of Daytona, and countless other events.

The 911’s incredible success has been based on two key factors: a brilliant and charismatic design that provides the perfect car for performance tuners of all ambitions and abilities, matched with Porsche’s program of aggressive and innovative development, which has always kept the 911 several steps ahead of the competition.

Porsche 911 Performance Handbook 1963–1998 is the third edition of Bruce Anderson’s exhaustive guide to this famous sports car, covering the entire history of Porsche’s air-cooled 911s. One of the world’s leading 911 experts, Anderson offers advice for buying a used 911, a wealth of information on engine rebuilding and modification, as well as everything you need to know about suspension, brakes, wheels, tires, and transmissions. This book is a must-have whether you’re a 911 owner looking to add a little extra oomph to your daily commute, a weekend club racer, or a seasoned pro-series mechanic.

Having most all Porsche books in my library to include 911 factory manuals this by far is the best book on the 911 series in respects to DIY even to include engine rebuilding and part variances. Its about time the 964 series got some attention since so many have tried to deep six it. Highly recommended!!

This is the seminal book on air-cooled Porsche details, mods, maintenance, etc. If you are a DIY person and a Porsche enthusiast, then you must have this in your library. I am more of a purist, so I do not participate in any of the mods in the book, but even those sections give you a glimpse of the workings of your Porsche. If you have an interest in DIY maintenance at a pretty high level, then this is one of the books you should have.

This book is written quite well and covers most engine modificatioons. Great Clear Photos too. I wished this book would of went more into the stock engine and how it was changed through out the years and how the changes impacted performance. I still have no idea of where you would even plug in a code scanner tool, never mind how to make computer changes with a laptop computer. I am sure there must be some programs out there to do this work that would even show you how of modify the engine performance as the car was actually being driven....but none of that was even covered. In a book this big and this well written I have to wonder why this subject was completely ignored. Vince Iacouzze / Auto Reatoration Videos

Having modified 10 911's, this book came in handy. DO NOT START A PROJECT RIGHT AWAY! The projects are entailled and require dismanteling the engine and fuel supply. These items can be very tricky (on a 911) to get working correctly again once dismanteled from working. BUY ALL THE PARTS YOU WILL NEED BEFORE STARTING, they are pricey and unavailable. The book is NOT a porsche dealer shop manual. SO once your beast is apart in your garage, let your wifey know it will be there, dead, tying up her Mercedes spot for roughly 3 months or more. My 94 turbo (single 28mm) is still there a year later, this book (greasy) open on the bench (she drives a 2004 turbo 911 not a POS mercedes). My '94 turbo has fuekl issues, the DME had a solder line break, which is of course not covered in ANY books, let alone mentioned in this one. Like always several books are poised at the ready on the bench. This one has lots of pictures. Torques are confusing, follow factory recommended. Since you are pumping up the ponies by 10% or more (the '94 turbo dynos 405 at rears), torques are VERY important, (think piston through the head). Parts such as cases for an H6 are getting harder to find - in particular the H6 and 2.4 liter, since many (inclding me) are putting them in their little 914 race beastie (get that chequered flag!). DO NOT BE AFRAID TO SEND IT TO THE DEALER IN PIECES! Try to remember this is a very rare animal you have started open heart surgery on. Keep lots of jars of money around to pay the dealer the $150 an hour. Buy the book. Use pro mechanics for stuff you can't do. Buy bigger beefier parts (901 gears and new bearings and synchros, don't scrimp yo will be doing it again). Buy all the stuff right up front and LABLE EVERYTHING! (Especially wiring, schematics post 1988 are VERY difficult to find, they are not on Pelican.
