5.0 out of 5 stars Great guide for DIY Porsche fans
Rare for a technical guide, this book is surprisingly well written. Rather than reading like a manual, the book tells the story of the Porsche 996. Every imaginable item about these cars is covered in detail and the thorough research is apparent. Additionally, there is a great DIY section which covers some basic and advanced maintenance and upgrades.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected
If you love the Porsche 996 and want to know about every variation and the history etc this is the book for you. If you want to know step by step how to switch out your coil springs for coilovers it's not in there.

5.0 out of 5 stars If you own or care about the Porsche 996 you NEED this book., September 11, 2008

I am fortunate to own more than one Porsche. I stumbled upon Mr. Streather's books when he wrote his first Porsche book. I was amazed at the amount of work, detail, and insight that he has put into each book. I now own 5 of his books. These are unique. They are NOT coffee table books. Not only do they have superb attention to getting the details correct, you can also use them as a limited DIY service manual. If you are a Porsche guy, you may already know that the Factory shop manuals are incredibly expensive and presume that you have been to the Factory technical schools AND have all the Factory computer equipment and tools to work on the cars.... rendering them full of interesting technical bits but borderline useless for working on your own Porsche. Not only is this book a nice read, it borders on EXCELLENCE. [Disclaimer: He used some of my images in the book. The only reason I contributed was because of his earlier Porsche books and saw this as an opportunity to be a small part of something genuinely worthwhile in the Porsche enthusiast world.] Pricey, but you are paying for quality and substance.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best single resource book for the 996, August 16, 2010
This review is from: Porsche 996 The Essential Companion: Supreme Porsche (Paperback)
If you're looking for a single, massive book that will tell you everything you ever wanted to know about your 996, including a series of DIY projects, this is the book for you. This book covers what options/technology/mechanicals are used in your 996 and WHY they are there. Including descriptions about what they do, the reasons why Porsche used them, previous version of said technology and upgrade options. I call this the 996 Bible.

No, it does not cover how to "alter" your suspension setup, nor how to modify your engine for more HP, etc, etc...rather it focuses on the technology that is in the car. DIY projects cover simple oil changes, spark plugs and serpentine belt changes...to more involved water pump replacement, alternator, clutch work, etc.

It's like a service manual, technical manual and historical review document rolled into one!

The best money you can spend "on" your 996.

5.0 out of 5 stars As I expected, November 11, 2010

As a 996 Owner I was interested in this book because as I am sure you know that there are not too many other books available right now that go into any real detail. I enjoy working on my 996 and I was looking for something that would provide me some depth on my car, this doesn't cover everything but it will suffice for the time being. It would be great if it were more like a Haynes book, but as I said, it will work for now. I would recommend this to anyone who owns a 996 just for the information that it does provide.

I would rate myself a "below average work on my car kind of guy", so something like this book should be of considerable help to someone like myself. (I have a brother who is a Master Mechanic, which really helps!) According to my brother this book should help in more then a few ways, providing some detail on certain components and views that we didn't have before, so with this said, if you are looking for more information then just how to do an oil change, and you want to learn more about your car and you enjoy working on your car, then this is likely what you are looking for and you should buy this book.

If you are looking for a pretty history book, think again, as there are some interesting photos, but I wouldn't suggest that you buy it just for that. This is a book that is for people who want to be able to understand their 996 a little better and be able to do something more than just an oil change, the overall content covers some pretty good stuff that should help you understand your 996 a little more then you do now. (Or at least this is the case for me.)

I gave it a 5 star rating because it is exactly what I thought it was going to be!

A great book. Forget the owners manual, this is the book every 996 owner should have. Helps you to understand how this complex car is put together and allows the average mechanic to do many routine service items.

This book is well done, enjoyable and easy read for the non-mechanic enthusiast who wants to learn how to do some of their own minor maintenance and repairs (and save hundreds in repair bills).

4.0 out of 5 stars Currently the best 996 book on the market, October 15, 2011

As the title says, this is the best book on the 996 currently available. If you are used to the Bentley Manuals for the 911SC and carrera, you will be a bit disappointed with the type of information in this book. There is a lot of history and not enough DIY info. That being said, there is more DIY info here than anywhere else (book wise). I just expected more. I was hoping for technical manual but got a book with a DIY section.

5.0 out of 5 stars Better Than Porsche's Bible, January 20, 2011

If I had the necessary $2700 to buy the official Porsche shop manual(s) for the 996 series, I would save myself $2640 dollars and buy this manual instead. This book contains everything that any competent owner could possibly hope to accomplish at the home shop level. Even an independent shop would find this book to be adequate for their needs. None better in my opinion
