Customer Reviews

He especially likes the maintenance advice.

If I had not had that resource available to me, as many who buy at a dealership or 4th or 5th owner used will not, I'd consider this book to be a necessity.

There are many FREE online forums and bulletin boards with friendly and knowledgeable Boxster/Cayman owners that are equally, if not more so, helpful.

I didn't know what to expect when I bought this book, but it truly does what it says on the cover. I'm not into stripping my Boxster down, but I want to know what things do when my mechanic tells me what's wrong. Mark Bennett is an English guru on Boxsters and Caymans and he gets the balance right on fixing the things I've sometimes done myself (like rotors and pads, heat shields) and the more complicated jobs. He explains clearly all the basic stuff (do you know how to clean your car properly?) and what you need to do just to run your 986 or 987 everyday as Dr Porsche intended and enjoy it. It's not a shop manual, but it's found a permanent place in my car.
I heard that the reason for the book's delay was that he broke his back. The book was worth the wait and I hope you're well now, Mark.

If the owners manual for your Boxster is missing and this is the only book you can find to buy, fine. But the information in it is largely redundant to other, less expensive, sources. And the remaining "added value" portion is idiosyncratic at best, including such non-mainstream activities as front bumper shell removal and replacement (ostensibly to clean leaves out of the radiators) or, so help me, the proper way to wash your car. Seriously? (Note: anyone who really *needs* to attempt the Kabuki dance required to remove the front bumper shell would be far better off with the Bentley Boxster shop manual or the services of a competent mechanic.)

I pre-ordered this book for my wife's boxster. The release was delayed almost 18 months after the initial date. The book does not go into enough detail to describe the procedures. It has a lot of photos but again they are not detailed or not highlighted to identify the specific item the author wants you to look at. Arrows or circles would be helpful. It does recommend some very specific brand names of products to use on the boxster that are cheaper/better than the Porsche chemicals but many of them are only available in Europe. It is not a shop manual (it does not claim to be) but just doesn't give enough "meat" in his thoughts and descriptions and procedures for a DIY'er. I was very disappointed.

Its no Bentley manual, so lets get that out of the way first, but in the preface, the author spells that out clearly. That being said, this is almost a "For Dummies" or Cliff Notes version of the factory manual, expanding on the good, but often without complete clarity including pics, factory resources Porsche sends you with your car. Sure, there are sections that won't pertain to your vehicle (Ive got a 986-S, so the pre 03 986 info and 987 and Cayman stuff was interesting but not helpful), but learning about Porsches is something that, chances are, you are interested in in general if you own one.

When I bought my one-owner 986, the owner went over several "secrets" he had learned over the course of his 7 year ownership. If I had not had that resource available to me, as many who buy at a dealership or 4th or 5th owner used will not, I'd consider this book to be a necessity. As it stands for me, it filled in the gaps and has already made me a much more informed Boxster owner, without the time and money consuming trial-and-error. If for no other reason, this book is worth every penny, and a must have.

Which is conveniently the perfect size for glove-box storage!

My husband has a Porsche and wanted to learn more about it, so I got this for him. He is working his way through it and is very impressed with the utilty and depth of the information on the various systems. He especially likes the maintenance advice. He went ahead and bought a service manual also (this is not a replacement for that book), but that is something most owners won't want. This will be plenty.

I found the book to be helpful with operating tips and minor maintenance advice for my Boxster that I bought used. I adopted several of the book's cleaning and maintenance suggestions regarding the spoiler, convertible top, and brakes. I also learned about the cause of an annoying suspension noise from a description of the problem written in the book: worn plastic bushings of the sway bar drop links.
