Book Description

July 31, 2006
This book documents in lavish detail the unique styling, engineering, and performance of Porsche’s new mid-engine coupe - the Porsche Cayman. Produced in cooperation with Porsche AG, the book includes behind-the-scenes design blueprints, studio sketches and cutaway drawings, spec information, specially commissioned photography including testing and development, and historical comparisons with the 904 racing car.

Beautiful, commissioned photography and an engaging text tells the Cayman story in all its splendor—performance, technical features, handling, lightweight construction, intelligent use of space—at once a true Porsche and a unique model in its own right in the family of legendary sports cars. Leading German automotive photographers and journalists worked with Porsche, and the book is printed using a 7-color process and varnished pages for a luxurious look and feel (most illustrated books use a 4-color process and lesser glossy pages). Porsche Cayman is the ultimate collectible for any owner of the new car, and an essential contribution to any Porsche enthusiast's library.

Editorial Reviews

Review

“The book is as appealing as the car it exposes.”

Bolton Evening News (UK), Sept. 2, 2006

“The photographs make you feel ‘up close and personal’ with this latest model.”

About the Author

Jutta Deiss, born in 1956, adopts a subtle strategy when she is tracking down interesting stories - both as a freelance journalist and as the creative general manager of the Stuttgart-based Head-Line company.  Her work appears mostly in magazines and books.  She makes no secret of her affinity with Porsche or of the pleasure it gave her to follow the development history of the Cayman.
Elmar Brummer, born in 1963, likes to report on things that move him (in every sense of the term) and others.  His articles appear in major daily newspapers and magazines.  In his editorial capacity of Head-Line he has tracked down and identified various aspects of the Cayman for the reader.
Reiner Schloz, born in 1958, has attended many a major sport event as reporter or columnist, but his view of the world extends well beyond the sport arena, as does his editorial work for Head-Line.  The Cayman was for him the exception that proves the rule: it captured and held his attention.
Markus Leser, born in 1964, began work as a sport photographer for agencies in Munich and Stuttgart.  He has gained many national and international awards.  A freelancer since 1996, he has pursued situations and subjects that capture his fancy - which of course includes the Cayman.
Stefan Warter, born in 1961, is a leading automobile photographer with a particular preference for Porsche cars.  911, Carrera GT and Cayenne have all posed for his camera; the Cayman too was captured on film and made a thoroughly positive impression on him.
Ingo Barenschee, born in 1965, values his private freedom and, as a dedicated automobile photographer, likes to detect dynamism in all its forms.  His first meeting with the Cayman satisfied all his wishes, and he was therefore only too willing to record its arduous testing program in the most extreme conditions.

3.0 out of 5 stars Runs on Rails, October 11, 2007

This review is from: Porsche Cayman: Thrill of the Chase (Hardcover)
Let me admit a bias up front: I own a Cayman S, which runs like a screaming banshee and handles like it's on rails. The book about this new Porsche model was a gift, and I am very grateful for this gift. The book's attributes include another reviewer's description of the Cayman's history of development. The book has two shortcomings. First, the very skilled photography is both a blessing and a curse. The Cayman's spectrum of color options have been unduly narrowed in the examples shown, and the overtones have "fogged" most shots. "Ethereal ad infinitum" is my vote for the caption for most of this book's photographs, but not for the car, which though certainly beautiful, is an automotive Cheetah. Further detracting from the photographic essay, is an excess of photos of the door handles, hand break levers, and the like. Sounds like a sales brochure? Well, look at the resumes of the authors, Porsche brochure writers of the first rank.

In sum, I'm glad that I have this book. I would guess that most Cayman owners would enjoy it as well. Many enthusiastic owners of other Porsche and other sports car models may well cherish this book. But, it's self-congratulatory message shines through. This book is as biased toward the new Porsche Cayman as I am.

This book has some wonderful shots of one of the most incredible Porsches to come out in quite some time. This book feature an in depth background about the car's history and development as well as detailed descriptions about the Cayman's features. If anything I only wish their were a greater variety of shots surrounding some of the amazing color combinations available on the car as most of the shots center around the now classic Arctic Silver. Overall though this is a nice coffee table book and a must for Cayman fans.

This book has some outstanding pictures of the Porsche Cayman. Some of the scenes are excellent and the photography is very well done. I thought the text was not of the same caliber as the photo work. I think some of it was a little too tongue in cheek for my tastes. But overall, I recommend it.
