Product Description

This innovative PCI PCMCIA adapter creates a PCMCIA port on your desktop computer - in other words, you save the cost of separate adapters that perform the same function on notebook and desktop computers! With support for a broad range of CardBus/PCMCIA compliant cards, even if you don't use a notebook computer, the PCI PCMCIA adapter offers a convenient way to proactively add the functionality offered by CardBus cards to a desktop computer, without having to open the computer chassis multiple times for card installation. The PCI PCMCIA adapter also offers a cost-effective peripheral swapping solution, allowing users to swap CardBus connected peripherals between desktop and laptop computers - a cost-saving solution that's quick and easy to install.

This card slot that makes you be able to use a PCMCIA card in your pc works great with one minor flaw. On some machines the pc will not boot unless you have a PCMCIA card in the slot.

I brought this card to use my Dlink DWL-G650 AirPlus Xtreme G in one of my older desktops. I bought this card because it was made by startech a really good company. I installed the card and update drivers from startech website. After installation, I couldn't get the part to work then I started to have problems with my computer. I tried to uninstall drives first then the part with no luck, it crash my computer. I had to wipe and start over, tried it again with the dates on the disk with the same results. so wipe and start over, I called startech support and find out that the product I had wasn't even theirs. I sent pictures of the package and part, and they confirmed that wasn't their product. I contacted the seller for exchange or replacement, seller accused me of stating that the card was fake. I still did not get an exchange or replacement or refund from Seller (cybershop). I at this time cannot recommend this item from whatever company this came from. If you get this item from startech there is a good chance it will work fine. Ask seller for information and proof of company or other wise buy at your own risk.

I purchased this to easily transfer files from my Windows 7 based PC to my vintage HP 200LX palmtop. This card will read / write to PCMCIA cards used by the HP95lx, 100lx, and the OmniGo .... This PCI card will read / write standard ATA and flash disk type PCMCIA cards for any device that uses these type cards .... this card will read / write to a PCMCIA adaptor that may have a Compact Flash, SD, or other type of modern storage inserted into it .... this card will allow you to use PCMCIA wireless cards on your PC .....

This card is half the price of purchasing a OEM connectivity kit to transfer files via the serial port .... and that assumes you have an old school DB9 serial port interface on your PC .... If not, you'll be spending another $25 dollars or so ....

There are USB to PCMCIA readers on the market, but again, they are twice the price of this card .... If you are looking for convenience, maybe the USB interface is the route to take .... this card faces out the back of your PC, and you'll have to take the extra 2 seconds to reach around and insert or remove it .....

Actual drivers are available for installation of this card onto a XP based OS and older .... no drivers are included with this card .... For WIN7 and 8, no external drivers are required .... DO NOT be tricked by the number of third party sites on the web that want to install 'driver update' software onto your computer ... the original driver for this card is available from HP's support website ... HP's chip is used in this card .... ENE CB1410 .... when looking for drivers for WIN XP and older, don't google this card, google the chip i.d. (ENE CB1410) .....

Physical installation into your PC is so simple .... Just insert it into any empty PCI slot ...

Purchased this for a client's Dell Vostro 420 -- bad choice. This adapter card is not fully compatible and requires a card inserted in the adapter to boot properly (otherwise hangs permanently at Windows splash screen if adapter card is empty -- even in safe mode).

Tested on same Dell machine with XP, Vista and Windows 7 to confirm it wasn't an OS issue - same issue with each.

E-mailed StarTech about this problem and the tech said this is a known issue with various Dell models but a BIOS update should fix it. Unfortunately, Dell is not releasing anymore BIOS updates for this machine so back the card goes to Amazon... As a side note, it did work fine in an MSI board (thus the 3 stars) but that doesn't really matter in this situation since this card wasn't for me.

Both Amazon.com and StarTech should list this known compatibility issue to warn others since an affected Dell user shouldn't be required to have a card present in the adapter at each boot - especially if updating the BIOS isn't an option as was the case here.
